Day 1 Afternoon – First Mara Game Drive: The Open Plains
The first afternoon in the Masai Mara tends to recalibrate everything. The plains are vast and the wildlife is immediate and everywhere at once. Elephant herds move across the middle distance. Cheetah scan from the tops of termite mounds. The Mara’s lion population, the densest in Kenya, is distributed across the reserve in known territories that your guide has driven for years. The drive from Lake Naivasha to the Aberdare Salient heads north through Naivasha town and onto the road that climbs toward the Central Highlands. The journey takes approximately three hours and the landscape changes steadily as the altitude rises, the Rift Valley acacia giving way to highland agriculture and then to the dense forest of the Aberdare Range. Afternoon – Aberdare Forest Drive and Waterfall Walk
The afternoon in the Aberdare covers the forest road network on the lower slopes of the Salient, the primary habitat of the bongo antelope.
