Day 1

Arrival in Kigali - Welcome to the Land of a Thousand Hills

Morning and Afternoon – Arrival and Kigali Orientation

Your rwanda honeymoon package begins at Kigali International Airport. Your Africa Bed of Roses Safaris representative meets you on arrival and transfers you to your chosen Kigali hotel. Check in, freshen up, and take the afternoon for a private guided orientation of the city with your guide. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most important cultural visit available in the capital and the one that gives the city’s extraordinary recovery story its full weight and context. The memorial is thoughtfully designed, carefully managed, and provides the historical foundation that makes Rwanda’s current energy and ambition comprehensible.

The afternoon continues with a visit to the Inema Arts Centre, one of Rwanda’s finest contemporary art galleries, and the craft market at Caplaki where the country’s artisanal production,  woven baskets, soapstone carvings, and the distinctive imigongo geometric art made from cow dung and natural pigments,  is displayed and sold. The coffee-to-cup experience at one of Kigali’s specialty coffee bars closes the cultural afternoon with a cup of Rwandan single-origin coffee that is among the finest available in East Africa.

Evening – Welcome Romantic Dinner in Kigali

The first evening of the rwanda honeymoon is a private romantic dinner arranged by Africa Bed of Roses Safaris at one of Kigali’s finest dining establishments. The Kigali restaurant scene has matured rapidly and the options for a genuinely exceptional first honeymoon dinner, whether Rwandan cuisine, fusion cooking, or international fine dining with hill views, are among the best available in the region. Your guide selects the restaurant that best matches the couple’s preferences and the reservation is made in advance. It is the right beginning to seven days in one of Africa’s most extraordinary countries.

Accommodation Options for Honeymooners Kigali Serena Hotel (Mid-Range City Hotel, central Kigali, excellent dining and spa) The Retreat by Heaven (Mid-Range Boutique Hotel, Kiyovu, Kigali, rooftop pool and city views) Hôtel des Mille Collines (Mid-Range Hotel, central Kigali, historic property with pool and terrace) Ubumwe Grande Hotel (Mid-Range Hotel, Kigali, rooftop pool and panoramic city views)

Nights:  1 night at your chosen Kigali hotel Meals:  Welcome romantic dinner included. Drinking water provided.

Rwanda Attractions

Morning – Transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes approximately two and a half hours northwest through the Rwandan highlands, the road climbing and descending through the hills that give the country its thousand-hills character. The landscape becomes progressively more agricultural as the road approaches the north, the volcanic soil producing the dark green terracing that covers every hillside in the Musanze district. The Virunga volcanoes appear above the treeline in the final approach to the park, their perfect conical shapes rising above the surrounding highlands in the distinctive silhouette that makes the Volcanoes park entrance one of the most dramatically beautiful arrivals on the rwanda honeymoon package route.

Arrive at your lodge in the Musanze area for lunch, a gorilla trekking briefing from your ranger, and the afternoon programme.

Afternoon – Twin Lakes Crater Hike and Village Walk

The first Volcanoes afternoon is a hike to the twin crater lakes of Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, two volcanic crater lakes set in the hills below the Virunga volcanoes with a view from the crater rim that is among the most romantic landscape viewpoints in the entire rwanda honeymoon itinerary. The lakes lie in adjacent craters separated by a narrow ridge, their surfaces reflecting the sky and the surrounding hills in colours that change from silver to blue to deep green depending on the light and the hour.

The afternoon also includes a guided walk through one of the communities at the base of the Virunga slopes, the farming villages whose fields run right to the park boundary and whose residents have built a relationship with the gorilla conservation programme that the entrance fees and the community revenue sharing has supported. The cultural visit provides the human context for the conservation story that the gorilla trekking the following morning will make directly experiential.

Evening – Forest-Edge Sundowner and Romantic Dinner

The first Volcanoes evening is marked with sundowners at the forest edge above your lodge, the Virunga volcanoes visible above the treeline and the highland air cool around you as the sun drops behind the Congo border hills to the west. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges a private romantic setup for the evening, candlelit dinner in the lodge with the forest sounds beginning outside as the light fades. The anticipation of the gorilla trekking tomorrow morning gives the dinner a particular quality of forward-looking excitement that the best honeymoon evenings carry.

Day 2

Kigali to Volcanoes National Park - Arrival and First Gorilla Afternoon

Gorilla Trekking

Day 3

First Gorilla Trek and Golden Monkey Encounter

Early Morning – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The gorilla trekking morning begins with a briefing at the Rwanda Development Board headquarters at Kinigi before sunrise. The ranger explains the trekking protocols, the behavioural rules that protect both the gorillas and the visitors, and the specific family group your couple will be tracking that morning. Groups are limited to a maximum of eight visitors per habituated family per day, and the family assignments ensure that no group is too large and no family is visited by more visitors than the habituation programme allows.

The trek begins at the forest edge and moves into the Virunga forest following the advance ranger team’s radio directions to the family’s morning position. Trek times vary from thirty minutes to four hours of uphill forest walking depending on the family’s overnight location. The Virunga forest is dense and beautiful, the Afromontane vegetation a world of giant hagenia trees, hypericum shrubs, and the thick undergrowth that the gorillas feed on and move through.

When the family is found, the hour begins. The silverback may be resting ten metres from your couple or moving through the vegetation directly past the group. The females groom each other in the undergrowth nearby. The juveniles play in the branches above, chasing and wrestling with the energy and noise that young gorillas and young humans share across the genetic distance between our species. The infants cling to their mothers’ backs and peer at the visitors with the curious, dark-eyed attention of animals that have learned that the visitors are harmless.

No preparation adequately describes what the gorilla hour is like. The physical proximity of a silverback gorilla. The intelligence visible in the family’s interactions. The forest sounds around you. The mist that often sits in the Virunga canopy in the morning and gives the encounter a quality of being inside something ancient and separate from the ordinary world. This is the experience that the rwanda gorilla honeymoon is built around and it is one that your couple will carry together for the rest of your lives.

Afternoon – Golden Monkey Trekking

The afternoon of the gorilla trekking day is the golden monkey trek, a complementary primate experience that follows the morning’s gorilla encounter with a lighter, faster, more playful counterpart. The golden monkey is an endangered Albertine Rift endemic found only in the bamboo zones of the Virunga and the Rwenzori mountains, its golden-orange and black colouring making it one of the most visually striking primates in Africa.

The golden monkeys of Volcanoes National Park are habituated and reliably found in the bamboo forest below the gorilla zone. The trek is shorter and less physically demanding than the gorilla trek, and the monkeys move through the bamboo with a speed and an energy that the ground-dwelling gorillas do not have. A group of fifty golden monkeys feeding in the bamboo canopy above your couple, their golden coats catching the filtered light through the bamboo stems, is one of the most beautiful primate sightings available on the rwanda honeymoon safari and a perfect complement to the gorilla hour of the morning.

Accommodation Options for Honeymooners Virunga Lodge (Mid-Range Lodge, Musanze, on the crater rim above Lake Burera with Virunga volcano views) Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (Mid-Range Lodge, Musanze, directly below the Virunga volcanoes) Bisate Lodge (Mid-Range Eco-Lodge, Musanze, inside the forest with gorilla habitat views) Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Mid-Range Lodge, Musanze, affordable with excellent Virunga views)

Nights:  2 nights at your chosen Volcanoes National Park lodge Meals:  Full board throughout. Two gorilla trekking permits, golden monkey trek, twin lakes hike, and forest-edge romantic dinner included. Drinking water provided.

Walking Safari

Day 4 Morning – Transfer from Volcanoes to Lake Kivu

The drive from the Musanze area to Lake Kivu follows the road west through the Rwandan highlands and then descends to the lake shore. The journey takes approximately two to three hours depending on which section of the lake you are heading to, and the road passes through some of the most beautiful highland scenery in Rwanda, the hills terraced in green and the road cutting through the plantation and forest country of the volcanic highlands.

The arrival at Lake Kivu, the first sight of the water through the trees and then the full panorama of the lake opening ahead of you, is one of the most quietly beautiful arrival moments of the rwanda honeymoon package. Check in at your chosen lakeside property, take lunch on the terrace with the lake in front of you, and let the change of scene settle.

Day 4 Afternoon – Lake Kivu Island Boat Trip

The first Lake Kivu afternoon is devoted to the water itself. A private boat trip from your resort takes your couple out onto the lake to visit the nearby islands that give Lake Kivu its distinctive geography. Napoleon Island in the north is the most famous, a rocky outcrop that hosts tens of thousands of fruit bats and is a significant breeding site for great white pelicans and other waterbirds. The bats emerge in a dark cloud at dusk that is visible from the Rubavu shore and creates one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in Rwanda’s accessible tourism landscape.

The island boat trip in the afternoon covers the lake’s southern bays and smaller islands for those staying at Karongi, the boat moving through the calm blue water between the islands with the surrounding hills reflected in the surface. A swimming stop in a sheltered bay, the lake water clean and warm at the surface in the afternoon heat, gives your couple a swim in one of Africa’s Great Lakes, an experience available to very few honeymoon itineraries on the continent.

Day 4 Evening – Romantic Lakeside Sundowner and Private Dinner

The Lake Kivu evening begins with sundowners on the water, either from a private terrace above the lake or from the boat itself as it returns to the shore in the last light. The lake at sunset has a quality that photographs do not fully capture: the water turns from blue to silver to orange, the hills on the DRC side go dark against the orange sky, and the silence of the lake surface in the evening air is complete. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges a private lakeside dinner for your couple, a table on the terrace above the water with the lake lit by the last of the sky’s colour and then by the stars that come out above Rwanda’s highland altitude with exceptional brightness.

Day 5 – Morning Kayaking, Coffee Tour and Afternoon Leisure

The second Lake Kivu morning opens with a kayaking session on the lake. The early morning is the best time for kayaking on Kivu: the water is completely still, the surrounding hills are reflected perfectly in the mirror surface, and the light is the soft, flat quality of a highland morning before the day’s breeze arrives. Your couple kayaks from the resort’s dock along the lake shore, the guide following at a discreet distance and pointing out the bird species that use the lake margin in the early hours. It is one of the most quietly romantic physical activities available on any honeymoon in Rwanda, the lake enormous around you and entirely calm, the hills above it green and silent.

The mid-morning coffee-to-cup experience visits one of the coffee washing stations near the lake shore where Rwanda’s extraordinary single-origin coffee is processed from the cherry to the washed bean that is then dried and exported to the specialty coffee markets of Europe, North America, and Japan. The guide covers the full processing chain with the expertise of someone who understands both the agricultural and the economic dimensions of Rwanda’s coffee industry, and the cup of fresh filter coffee drunk at the washing station at the end of the visit is the most direct possible connection to what the country’s volcanic highlands produce.

The afternoon is entirely free. The lake, the terrace, the hammock between the trees above the water, the spa at your resort, the simple pleasure of lying in the sun with the view of Lake Kivu in front of you and nowhere to be. Two nights at Lake Kivu gives the rwanda honeymoon its essential rest, the unhurried middle section of a seven-day journey that has been physically demanding and emotionally intense in the best possible way.

Accommodation Options for Honeymooners Kivu Serena Hotel (Mid-Range Hotel, Rubavu, on the Lake Kivu shore with excellent lake views) Inzu Lodge (Mid-Range Boutique Lodge, Karongi, secluded peninsula position on southern Lake Kivu) Cormoran Lodge (Mid-Range Lodge, Karongi, on the lake shore with private beach) Lake Kivu Serena Hotel (Mid-Range Hotel, Rubavu, beachfront with pool and water sports)

Nights:  2 nights at your chosen Lake Kivu accommodation Meals:  Full board throughout. Island boat trip, morning kayaking, coffee-to-cup tour, and private lakeside dinner included. Drinking water provided.

Days 4 - 5

Volcanoes to Lake Kivu - Two Nights of Lakeside Romance

Walking Safari

Day 6

Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest - Canopy Walk and Chimpanzee Trek

Morning – Transfer from Lake Kivu to Nyungwe and Canopy Walkway

The drive from Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest follows the road south along the lake shore and then inland into the forest country of southwestern Rwanda. The journey takes approximately two hours and the road passes through the tea estates that surround Nyungwe, the manicured rows of tea bushes extending across the hills to the forest edge in a landscape that is both agricultural and extraordinarily beautiful. The transition from the open tea estate country to the dense forest as the road enters the park is immediate and absolute.

Arrive at the Uwinka Visitor Centre in the heart of Nyungwe for the canopy walkway experience. The walkway is suspended 50 metres above the forest floor on a series of steel cables and wooden platforms, extending 160 metres between two forested hills and offering a perspective on the Nyungwe canopy that no ground-level trail can replicate. The view from the walkway on a clear morning takes in the full range of the forest stretching in every direction, the canopy below you alive with movement and birdcall, the forested hills rolling away to the Congo-Nile divide on one side and the tea estate margins on the other. It is one of the most dramatically romantic natural experiences available on a honeymoon in Rwanda.

The wind moves through the walkway as you stand above the canopy. The colobus monkeys that move through the upper canopy are occasionally visible from the walkway platform at eye level, their black-and-white colouring startling against the dark green of the leaves. The guide names the bird species that call from the canopy below and points out the structural features of the ancient forest that the walkway’s elevated position reveals. Check in at your lodge and take lunch before the afternoon programme.

Afternoon – Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

The Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking experience uses the same permit and habituation model as the gorilla trekking at Volcanoes and the Kibale trekking in Uganda, with the permit allowing a set time in the presence of one of the park’s habituated chimpanzee communities. The Nyungwe chimpanzees are found in large communities, some estimated at over 500 individuals, and the encounter is correspondingly more dramatic than the smaller habituated groups of some other trekking destinations.

The afternoon trek through the Nyungwe forest, following the advance ranger team’s radio contact with the habituated community, covers terrain that the canopy walkway morning has given you the overhead perspective on. At forest floor level, the scale of the trees and the density of the undergrowth are different from the aerial view, and the movement of the chimpanzee community through the canopy above is audible before it is visible. The calling and the crashing of the treetops that signals the community’s approach is one of the most exciting wildlife sounds available on the rwanda honeymoon safari route.

The hour in the company of the chimpanzee community gives your couple the second primate trekking experience of the rwanda honeymoon package, this one faster, louder, and more aerobatically theatrical than the gorilla encounter. The chimpanzees are our closest genetic relatives and the intelligence of the individuals, the complexity of the social interactions, and the sheer physical energy of the troop moving through the canopy produces an encounter that complements the gorilla trekking in the way the rwanda honeymoon itinerary intends.

Evening – Forest-Edge Dinner and Final Night in the Trees

The last night of the active section of the rwanda honeymoon package is spent at the forest edge in Nyungwe, the sounds of the ancient forest around the lodge and the colobus monkey calls drifting through the tree canopy outside. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges a private romantic dinner at the lodge for your final forest evening, candlelit, unhurried, and designed to close the most extraordinary chapter of the journey with the attention it deserves. Tomorrow is the return to Kigali and the departure. Tonight is the forest.

Accommodation Options for Honeymooners Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel (Mid-Range Hotel, on the forest edge above the tea estates with Nyungwe views) Nyungwe Forest Lodge (Mid-Range Lodge, inside the forest, exceptional position on the forest-tea estate boundary) One and Only Nyungwe House (Mid-Range Tea Estate Lodge, on the Nyungwe tea estate boundary)

Nights:  1 night at your chosen Nyungwe Forest accommodation Meals:  Full board. Canopy walkway, chimpanzee trekking permit, and private romantic forest dinner included. Drinking water provided.

Nyungwe Forest Chimpanzee Trek

Morning – Final Forest Walk and Transfer to Kigali

The seventh and final day of the rwanda honeymoon package begins with a last walk in the Nyungwe forest before breakfast, the morning light arriving through the canopy and the forest waking around you with the bird calls and the primate sounds that the night has interrupted. Your Africa Bed of Roses Safaris driver arrives after breakfast for the transfer back to Kigali, a drive of approximately four to five hours that gives the journey home a landscape farewell through the hills and tea estates and highland agricultural country that Rwanda is made of.

Arrive in Kigali in the early afternoon for your international departure from Kigali International Airport. Your Africa Bed of Roses Safaris representative manages the airport send-off and the final arrangements of the rwanda honeymoon package with the same care that has characterised every arrangement of the seven days.

Reflection – What the Rwanda Honeymoon Gave You

Seven days. Six nights. The gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. The golden monkeys in the bamboo. The twin crater lakes in the highland light. Lake Kivu in the still morning from the kayak. Napoleon Island at dusk and the fruit bats above the water. The coffee cup at the washing station. The Nyungwe canopy from fifty metres above the forest floor. The chimpanzee community in the treetops. The colobus monkeys moving through the ancient forest. Kigali’s memorial and its art and its extraordinary cleanliness and its coffee and its hills.

This is what honeymoon in Rwanda delivers. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris will be ready when you want to come back.
