Day 1

Arrive in Kigali

You arrive at Kigali International Airport and our representative meets you at arrivals for transfer to your Kigali hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the evening can include a quiet dinner at a city restaurant before an early night ahead of a busy few days. The Retreat by Heaven is our preferred Kigali option for honeymooners, with private pool villas, a full spa, and a calm, garden atmosphere that eases the transition from long-haul travel to East Africa.

Staying at: The Retreat by Heaven, Kigali (Luxury)

Your morning begins with a guided tour of Kigali. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is your first stop, with a private guide providing the oral history and context that makes the visit genuinely meaningful rather than overwhelming. The Kimironko Market follows, a traditional crafts and produce market that rewards unhurried browsing. After lunch, you drive east to Akagera National Park, arriving in time for a late afternoon game drive through the park’s open savannah terrain. Your first elephant sighting, your first giraffe against the acacia line, is likely today.

Staying at: Wilderness Magashi, Akagera (Luxury)

Day 2

Kigali City Tour, Then Transfer to Akagera National Park

Day 3

Full Day Safari in Akagera

Today is given over entirely to Akagera. An early morning game drive takes advantage of the best light and the peak activity period for predators. Akagera’s lions, reintroduced only a decade ago, are most frequently spotted in the early morning hours. Elephants, buffalo, and the park’s growing rhino population are reliably encountered. Your afternoon is spent on a private boat cruise on Lake Ihema, watching hippos at close range while the late afternoon light turns the water gold. A bush dinner can be arranged on the lake edge for couples who want the day to end as it began, in the landscape.

Staying at: Wilderness Magashi, Akagera (Luxury)

You drive west from Akagera through Rwanda’s central hills to Volcanoes National Park, a journey of about four hours that crosses the full width of the country through landscapes of terraced hillsides and rural towns. The drive is comfortable and the scenery is consistently beautiful. You arrive at your lodge in the Virunga foothills by mid-afternoon. The evening is your gorilla briefing and preparation. Your guide goes over what to expect, what to wear, and the etiquette of being in the presence of a gorilla family. After dinner, an early night is strongly encouraged.

Staying at: Bisate Lodge (Luxury)

Day 4

Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Day 5

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You wake before dawn. Breakfast is early, light, and eaten with a particular quality of silence that characterises mornings before something important. At the park headquarters in Kinigi you receive your assignment, which gorilla family you will visit today, and your trek group assembles. Your guide leads you into the forest. Trackers radio ahead with location updates. The forest gets denser. Then it gets quiet in a particular way. And then there they are.

One hour. You will want more. Everyone wants more. Walk back to the vehicle. Return to the lodge. Order a drink. Talk about what just happened. Do very little else for the rest of the afternoon.

Staying at: Bisate Lodge (Luxury)

Your second morning in the Virungas is spent with the golden monkeys in the bamboo belt below the gorilla habitat. The permit costs USD 100 per person and the experience is lighter in register than gorilla trekking, more playful and energetic, which makes it an ideal follow-up activity. Your afternoon includes a community walk through villages near the lodge, with stops at local homes, the Kinigi women’s cooperative, and an encounter with the daily rhythms of life in one of the most beautiful corners of Rwanda.

Staying at: Bisate Lodge (Luxury)

Day 6

Golden Monkey Trekking and Cultural Experience

Day 7

Transfer to Lake Kivu

An hour’s drive south from Volcanoes National Park brings you down from the highlands to the shore of Lake Kivu at Gisenyi. The change in atmosphere is immediate. The temperature rises a few degrees, the vegetation thickens, and ahead of you the lake stretches wide and blue towards the mountains of the DRC. Your afternoon is entirely free. A boat cruise can be arranged for the late afternoon, or you can simply settle onto your terrace and let the lake do what it does. Tomorrow is the last full day of your Rwanda honeymoon safari.

Staying at: Mantis Kivu Marina Bay or Lake Kivu Serena Hotel (Luxury)

A slow morning on Lake Kivu. Kayaking if you want it. A long breakfast on the terrace if you prefer. A walk along the lakeshore through Gisenyi town. A final coffee with the view. In the early afternoon, you drive back to Kigali, arriving with enough time for a last dinner in the city before your international departure. The drive through Rwanda’s hills at this point in the trip, after eight days in the country, has a different quality. The landscape has become familiar. You find yourself noticing things you missed the first time.

Staying at: The Retreat by Heaven, Kigali (if overnight required)

Day 8

Lake Kivu at Leisure, Transfer to Kigali
