Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas is a family-owned Relais and Chateaux property on Paje Beach on Zanzibar’s east coast, with 19 private villas and 3 Cinnamon rooms spread across a two-kilometre stretch of beach and tropical garden. It is one of the smallest and most exclusive boutique properties on the island, and the family ownership gives it a warmth and consistency of character that large resort groups struggle to replicate.
The property received the Michelin Key designation in 2025, recognising the quality of the guest experience across hospitality, dining, and design. Each villa comes with its own private pool, outdoor bathtub, rain shower, and dedicated butler, and the combination of privacy, space, and service quality creates an experience that feels genuinely customised rather than standardised.
Paje Beach is famous among kite surfers for the consistent trade winds that run along the east coast, but the property itself occupies a section of beach that is calm enough for swimming at high tide, and the lagoon system that extends beyond the reef provides sheltered water for snorkelling and kayaking at all states of the tide.
Accommodation at Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas and Spa
Nineteen private villas are arranged across the property in different configurations. One-bedroom villas fit two or three adults and feature panoramic rooftop terraces, private pools, outdoor bathtubs, and rain showers. Two-bedroom villas accommodate up to five guests and have sea-view balconies alongside the pool and outdoor bathing facilities. The five-bedroom presidential villa, designed for larger groups, has its own rooftop terrace, jacuzzi, and private cinema.
Every villa has a dedicated butler, and the butler service at White Sand is genuinely exceptional: anticipatory without being intrusive, warm without being performative, and deeply knowledgeable about the island, the food, and the activities available. Our butler, Hasan, knew without being told that we wanted coffee before anything else in the mornings, and it was ready on the terrace before we had opened the villa doors.
The design throughout is elegant without being ostentatious: clean lines, natural materials, and the integration of local craftsmanship in the furniture, textiles, and decorative details. Outdoor staircases, rooftop daybeds, and the placement of each pool to catch both the morning and evening light reflect genuine architectural intention.
Dining
The dining at White Sand Luxury Villas is one of the reasons for the Michelin Key. The kitchen operates a garden-to-table approach using produce from the property’s own garden and locally sourced ingredients from Zanzibar’s remarkable food culture: fresh fish from the dhow boats that work the reef, spices from the island’s famous plantations, and tropical fruits that arrive at peak ripeness.
Meals can be taken at the main restaurant, on the beach, by the pool, in the villa garden, or on the rooftop terrace. The flexibility is real and the execution is consistently excellent. Our most memorable meal was a beach dinner that Hasan arranged for our last evening: a table in the sand, lanterns, the Indian Ocean within touching distance, and a menu that moved through Swahili coast flavours with a sophistication that would not be out of place in a Nairobi or London restaurant.
The spa uses local oils, traditional techniques, and treatments inspired by the Swahili and Arabian medicinal traditions that have met and mixed on this island for centuries. The hammam treatment is particularly recommended after long days of activity.

Swimming on the east coast is tide-dependent. High tide brings calm, swimmable water directly in front of the property. At low tide the lagoon extends and the water retreats, but snorkelling in the exposed reef is excellent. The property team advises guests on daily tidal conditions.
Paje is approximately one hour by road from Stone Town and the airport, making it easily accessible while remaining relatively secluded from the busier north coast resort areas.
