Sarova Lion Hill sits on elevated land within Lake Nakuru National Park, approximately a two-hour drive from Nairobi in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. The elevated position commands panoramic views over the lake and the park, with the Mau Hills and the rift valley escarpment visible on the horizon.
The lodge has a character shaped by its decades within the Sarova Hotels group, one of Kenya’s most established hospitality brands, which means a level of institutional competence that makes the experience consistently smooth. The team knows what they are doing and take genuine pride in it.
The lodge offers a range of room types including standard rooms, superior rooms, and suites, each with views of the lake, the park, or the lodge’s gardens. Rooms are spacious, well-furnished, and equipped with the amenities that make a proper lodge stay comfortable: reliable hot water, quality beds, well-designed bathrooms, and balconies or private terraces where applicable.
Our suite had a large private balcony that faced the lake, and the first morning we were there we stood on it watching flamingos in the distance while the sun came up over the Mau Hills. There is a particular pink quality to the lake light in the early morning, when the birds’ colour mixes with the reflective surface of the soda lake, that is unlike anything else in Kenya.
The lodge’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a menu that balances international and Kenyan dishes. The buffet breakfasts are generous and well-prepared, with fresh fruit, eggs to order, and good coffee. Evenings in the restaurant are unhurried and warm.
Outdoor dining experiences can be arranged, including sundowners in the park with the lake visible from your position as the sun drops behind the escarpment. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris had arranged a private sundowner for us on our second evening, and we drove to a point near the lake shore and sat with cold drinks while the flamingos moved in the distance and the light changed every few minutes.

Game drives within Lake Nakuru National Park are conducted morning and afternoon, covering the lake shore, the woodland, and the more open savannah areas of the park. The park is home to both white and black rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, and the Rothschild giraffe, making it a genuinely Big Five destination of smaller scale.
Guided walks within the park’s designated walking zones, bird watching sessions, and sundowner experiences can all be arranged through the lodge. The flamingo viewing is entirely seasonal and dependent on the lake’s water levels and chemistry, but when the flamingos are present in large numbers, the sight is among the most remarkable in East Africa.
Absolutely. It provides a very different wildlife experience from the Masai Mara or Amboseli, with the combination of a rift valley lake, a fenced rhino sanctuary, and a compact park that delivers Big Five sightings in a contained area.
Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge sits directly inside Lake Nakuru National Park along the park’s Lion Hill ridge, giving it panoramic views across the lake and its surroundings. Being inside the park boundary means guests have immediate access to game drives without any daily travel in and out through the gates, and wildlife moves freely through the lodge’s own grounds. The nearest town is Nakuru, approximately 25 kilometres from the lodge via the Lanet or Nderit park gates.
From Nairobi, the lodge is a 160-kilometre drive along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, taking roughly two to three hours by road. From Nakuru town, follow Moi Avenue past Afraha Stadium to the main park gate, then follow signage inside the park to the lodge. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the road inside the park. The nearest major airport is Nairobi’s JKIA, approximately 169 kilometres away by road. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges all transfers as part of your honeymoon package.
Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya’s most rewarding wildlife destinations. The park’s most iconic residents are its pink flamingos, with the largest flocks typically gathering between July and November. Beyond the flamingos, guests can expect sightings of both white and black rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthog, baboon, pelicans, and marabou storks. The park’s combination of lake, acacia woodland, and open savannah supports an unusually diverse range of species within a compact area.
The lodge has 62 chalet-style cottages available in single, double, and triple configurations, two junior suites, and one superior suite, all overlooking Lake Nakuru and its surroundings. Each chalet has its own private terrace with natural views. Suite rooms include direct dial telephone, a minibar stocked on request, in-room safe, hairdryer, pillow menu, television, and tea and coffee making facilities. Wi-Fi is available throughout. For honeymooners, the suites offer the most private and well-appointed base within the lodge.
Game drives through Lake Nakuru National Park are the centrepiece of the experience, with guided drives covering the park’s wildlife and birdlife including the famous flamingos. Beyond drives, the lodge offers swimming and water games in the temperature-controlled outdoor pool, yoga, archery, birdwatching and bird feeding, nature walks, jogging, table tennis, and board games. A team of activity animators runs programmes throughout the day to keep guests engaged at a pace that suits them. The Tulia Wellness spa offers massages in a rustic garden tent setting, with treatments including Swedish, holistic, aromatherapy, and Indian options. The Adia gift shop rounds out the on-site facilities.
The lodge has a temperature-controlled outdoor pool open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, a sauna room, jogging track, expansive lawns for outdoor activities, the Tulia Wellness spa, the Adia gift shop, Wi-Fi throughout, and a full housekeeping service. There is no gym facility, but the combination of the pool, sauna, jogging track, and outdoor programming covers most fitness and relaxation needs adequately.
March through October offers the most temperate weather and strongest conditions for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities. For flamingo sightings specifically, July through November tends to produce the largest concentrations on the lake. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can advise on how a Nakuru stop fits within your broader Kenya honeymoon itinerary depending on travel dates.
The lodge welcomes families of all ages, with interconnecting rooms, a kids’ activity room, and babysitting services available on request. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are also provided for guests with mobility needs. For honeymooning couples travelling alongside family, the lodge’s size and activity range make it a practical base that keeps everyone engaged without compromising the romantic elements of the stay.
Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can design a complete Kenya honeymoon circuit that incorporates Sarova Lion Hill, with connecting transport between the Mara, Nakuru, Samburu, and the coast arranged seamlessly.
