Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

Kenya Acccommodation

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

Kilaguni Serena holds the distinction of being the first lodge built in any of Kenya's national parks, established in Tsavo West in 1962 at a time when the concept of a luxury facility in the heart of the wild was genuinely new. Six decades later, it remains one of Tsavo's most characterful properties, and the sense of continuity with Kenya's safari history gives it a depth that newer camps cannot manufacture.
Africa Bed of Roses Safaris described Kilaguni as a classic: not flashy, not minimalist, not trying to reinvent the safari lodge template, but genuinely good at what it has been doing for a very long time. After two nights there, we understood exactly what they meant.

Location and Setting

The lodge is built from volcanic stone, which roots it visually in the landscape it inhabits, and overlooks a natural waterhole that attracts elephants daily, often including some of Tsavo’s famous large-tusked individuals. On clear mornings, Mount Kilimanjaro is visible on the southern horizon, rising above the Tanzania-Kenya border in a view that reaches across two countries.

The park itself, Tsavo West, is Kenya’s largest protected area and covers a landscape of ancient lava flows, natural springs, dense bush, and open savannah. The Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water wells up from the volcanic rock and hippos can be observed from an underwater chamber, are one of the park’s most extraordinary natural features.

Accommodation

Rooms are built in the lodge’s distinctive volcanic stone style and are spacious, well-furnished with African-inspired decor, and equipped with modern amenities. The lounge, bar, and restaurant areas overlook the waterhole from a broad terrace, and the quality of wildlife viewing from the terrace alone makes the experience feel like a continuous game drive.

Dining

The restaurant serves three meals daily with a menu that balances Kenyan and international cooking. The terrace, with the waterhole visible below and the savannah extending beyond, is the defining dining location. Sundowners on the terrace as the elephants come in to drink is as close to a perfect Africa moment as any we experienced on the trip.

Activities

Frequently Asked Questions About

Kilaguni Serena Safari

Excellent. The waterhole in front of the lodge attracts elephants daily, often including some of Tsavo’s large-tusked individuals, making it one of the most reliable elephant-viewing locations in the park.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge sits within Tsavo West National Park in southeastern Kenya, approximately 270 kilometres from Nairobi and 240 kilometres from Mombasa. It holds a particularly significant place in Kenya’s safari history as the first lodge ever built inside a national park in the country. The property commands panoramic views of a permanent waterhole, the Chyulu Hills, and on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro, with wildlife visible from virtually every vantage point across the grounds.

By road from Nairobi the journey takes approximately five hours via the Mombasa Highway to Mtito Andei Gate, followed by a 30 to 40-minute drive to the lodge. From Mombasa the drive takes around four hours on the same highway. Guests travelling by the SGR Madaraka Express can disembark at Mtito Andei Station, approximately 20 kilometres from the lodge, with transfers arranged by the property. By air, the lodge has its own Kilaguni Airstrip serviced by charter and scheduled flights, with a transfer of only five to ten minutes from the airstrip to the lodge. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges all flights and transfers as part of your honeymoon package.

Accommodation is spread across a double-storey block overlooking the waterhole, a series of cottages to either side of reception, and a dedicated suite building. All rooms have views of either the waterhole or the Chyulu Hills, natural volcanic stone walls, king-size or twin beds, mosquito curtaining, a walk-in shower bathroom, writing and vanity unit, and a private veranda. The five suites are the natural choice for honeymooners, housed in their own private volcanic-stone building with waterhole and Chyulu Hills views. Each suite has a spacious en-suite master bedroom with a king-size bed, a bathroom with both bath and shower, a sitting room with a broad terrace, interior and exterior dining tables, a minibar stocked to preference, a private balcony, satellite television, and a dedicated room steward with in-room catering and bar service available throughout the stay.

Tsavo West is home to elephant, lion, cheetah, buffalo, leopard, and the rare lesser kudu, alongside over 600 bird species recorded across the park. The permanent waterhole in front of the lodge draws wildlife continuously and can be watched from rooms, the pool, the bar terrace, and the restaurant without leaving the property. Game drives extend the viewing to key Tsavo West landmarks including Mzima Springs, Roaring Rocks, and the Shetani Lava Flow.

Morning and evening game drives with experienced driver-guides cover Tsavo West’s wildlife and landscapes, including visits to Mzima Springs where hippos and crocodiles can be viewed from a submerged underwater chamber. Guided nature walks around the lodge explore tracks, birds, plants, and ecosystems with a knowledgeable naturalist. Wildlife viewing hides near waterholes allow stationary, undisturbed observation of animals drinking at close range. Sundowners at Lion Rock with the Chyulu Hills or Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, bush breakfasts at Lion Rock, and bush barbecue dinners under the stars are available at an additional charge and are among the most atmospheric experiences the lodge offers. Cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities, stargazing sessions with a guide and telescope, swimming in the pool overlooking the waterhole, and spa treatments covering Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massages round out the programme. For honeymooners, Africa Bed of Roses Safaris recommends combining the Lion Rock sundowner, a bush breakfast, and a private game drive to Mzima Springs into the stay.

The restaurant serves African and international cuisine in both buffet and à la carte formats across breakfast, lunch, and dinner, using fresh and locally sourced ingredients. The bar terrace overlooks the waterhole directly and is one of the more atmospheric spots in Tsavo West for a pre-dinner drink. Bush breakfasts at Lion Rock, bush barbecue dinners, and sundowner drinks at scenic viewpoints are available at an additional cost and can be arranged with the lodge ahead of time. Picnic lunch boxes are prepared on request for longer game drives, and special dietary requirements including vegetarian, gluten-free, and kosher are accommodated with advance notice.

Kilaguni combines historic significance, exceptional waterhole views, and the full range of Tsavo West experiences within a property that Serena Hotels has maintained to a consistently high standard over many decades. The five volcanic-stone suites with dedicated room stewards, in-room dining, and private balconies overlooking the waterhole offer honeymooners a genuinely elevated level of privacy and personal service. The lodge’s location gives easy access to Mzima Springs, Shetani Lava Flow, Roaring Rocks, and the Chyulu Hills, making it a strong base for couples who want to explore Tsavo West in depth. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris includes Kilaguni Serena in select Kenya honeymoon itineraries as a standalone Tsavo West base or as part of a multi-destination journey combining the coast, the Mara, and the Tsavo ecosystem.

Yes. The lodge offers romantic candlelit dinners, couples massage and spa treatments, private game drives, and guided nature walks tailored to the couple’s pace. Wedding packages are also available for couples who want to exchange vows at the outdoor terrace overlooking the waterhole, with traditional Maasai dancers and music available as part of the ceremony programme. A dedicated wedding planner handles all logistics, and Africa Bed of Roses Safaris coordinates all honeymoon-specific arrangements with the Kilaguni team before your arrival.
