Ashnil Aruba Lodge sits along the banks of Aruba Dam within Tsavo East National Park, approximately two to three hours by road from Mombasa and five to six hours from Nairobi. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranged our driving transfer from Mombasa airport as part of a bush-and-beach honeymoon combination, and the drive through the thorn scrub and savannah of Tsavo’s southern section was itself a steady introduction to the park’s scale and wildness.
The lodge has 52 rooms spread across cottages and tents, giving guests a range of accommodation styles within the same property. Standard rooms are in single-story cottages that offer garden or savannah views, while tented accommodations bring guests closer to the atmosphere of the bush. Eight interconnected rooms are available for families.
Our cottage had a private terrace facing the savannah, and the morning light across the open ground was consistently beautiful. The room was well-maintained, spacious, and equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay: good beds, a proper bathroom, reliable hot water, and a ceiling fan for the warm Tsavo nights.
The lodge’s restaurant overlooks the dam and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner from a menu that combines Kenyan and international cooking. The lounge area, with its wooden decks extending toward the water, is the best spot for an evening drink as the animals come in to drink at last light.
Bush breakfasts and bush dinners in scenic locations within the park can be arranged and add a dimension to the experience that the restaurant alone cannot provide.

Game drives within Tsavo East National Park are the primary activity, conducted morning and evening in 4×4 vehicles. The park is home to large elephant herds, lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, and a wide variety of plains game and birds. The Aruba Dam is viewable from the lodge and provides extraordinary wildlife watching without leaving the property.
Excellent. The lodge is well-positioned for a two or three night safari stop between a Nairobi flight and time on the Kenyan coast. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris specialises in exactly this kind of combined itinerary.
Ashnil Aruba Lodge sits in the heart of Tsavo East National Park on the banks of the Aruba Dam, one of the largest man-made dams in Kenya and a permanent water source that draws wildlife from across the surrounding plains. The open restaurant and swimming pool both overlook the dam directly, meaning wildlife viewing is possible throughout the day without leaving the lodge. Tsavo East’s flat, open terrain and sparse vegetation make it one of the most rewarding parks in Kenya for straightforward, high-visibility game viewing.
The lodge has 40 deluxe en-suite rooms, of which eight have interconnecting doors suited to families, four triple rooms with one interconnecting room, six luxury tents, and two rooms designed for guests with disabilities. For honeymooners, the luxury tents offer a more immersive bush atmosphere within the comfort of the lodge’s facilities, while the standard deluxe rooms provide a solid, well-appointed base with views of the dam and surrounding wilderness.
Tsavo East is famous for its large herds of red elephants, whose distinctive colouring comes from the iron-rich red soil of the region. The park is also home to lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and a wide range of plains game. Over 500 bird species have been recorded within the park, making it one of Kenya’s premier birdwatching destinations. The Aruba Dam itself is a consistent wildlife magnet, with animals gathering at the water’s edge throughout the day and providing sightings directly from the lodge.
Morning and evening game drives through Tsavo East National Park are led by experienced guides in open safari vehicles, covering the park’s Big Five and wider wildlife population. Guided birdwatching tours with expert naturalists cover the park’s 500-plus recorded species. Guided nature walks explore the flora and fauna of the park on foot, with attention to smaller animals, insects, and medicinal plants. Sundowners can be arranged at scenic locations within the park as the light fades over the wilderness. Wildlife conservation and culture lectures are offered regularly to give guests a deeper understanding of the Tsavo ecosystem. The swimming pool overlooking the game park provides a relaxed midday retreat between drives.
The lodge operates on a full-board basis covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The open restaurant overlooks the Aruba Dam from all angles and seats up to 150 guests, serving both local and international cuisine using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast includes a selection of hot and cold options, lunch and dinner feature soups, salads, grilled meats, and seafood dishes, and the bar carries beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Special dietary requirements are accommodated with advance notice.
The lodge has a swimming pool overlooking the national park, a lounge bar with African-inspired decor, a souvenir shop stocking curios, jewellery, clothing, and basic toiletries, business services including email and internet access, conference facilities, and an on-site infirmary staffed by a nurse for guest and staff medical needs. The dam-facing restaurant is the centrepiece of the lodge’s public spaces and doubles as a natural wildlife observation point throughout the day.
The two parks suit different priorities and many honeymooners find combining both into a single itinerary gives the most rewarding experience. Tsavo East, where Ashnil Aruba Lodge is located, is the stronger choice for effortless, high-visibility game viewing, with its open flat plains, large elephant herds, and the Aruba Dam drawing wildlife into clear sightlines. Tsavo West suits couples who want more varied and dramatic scenery, including volcanic terrain, the Mzima Springs underwater hippo viewing, and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary for endangered black rhino. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can design a Tsavo honeymoon itinerary that takes in both parks, using Ashnil Aruba Lodge as the Tsavo East base and pairing it with a Tsavo West property for a well-rounded wilderness experience.
Yes. The lodge offers dedicated honeymoon packages covering romantic dinners, spa treatments, game drives, and other tailored activities. Wedding packages are also available for couples who want to exchange vows within the park, including a ceremony in a scenic location, decorations, a wedding cake, champagne, and a honeymoon suite. The lodge’s position within Tsavo East National Park provides the privacy and seclusion that honeymooners look for, and the experienced team handles all planning and coordination so couples can focus entirely on enjoying their stay. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris works directly with the lodge to ensure honeymoon-specific arrangements are confirmed well before arrival.
