andBeyond Bateleur Camp

There is a certain kind of honeymoon couple who does not want a beach. They want something that stirs something deeper: the feeling of being alive inside a landscape so immense and so honest that everything else briefly falls away. My partner Amara and I are that kind of couple, and andBeyond Bateleur Camp in the Masai Mara is exactly the place we did not know we had been waiting for.
Africa Bed of Roses Safaris suggested Bateleur when we told them we were looking for something intimate, elegant, and deeply connected to the natural world. The description they gave us, copper bathtubs, crystal candlelight, Chesterfield sofas beside the plains, sounded almost theatrical. But standing in our tent on the first evening watching the sun bleed into the horizon over the Mara, we realised it was simply true.

A Camp Built for the Romantic Spirit

andBeyond Bateleur Camp sits at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment within the Kichwa Tembo private concession, a stretch of land that borders the western edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The name Kichwa Tembo means head of the elephant in Kiswahili, which tells you something about the wildlife that moves through the area. The concession covers private land leased from Maasai landlords, which means guests enjoy exclusivity, including the remarkable privilege of night drives that are not permitted inside the national reserve itself.

The camp is split into two smaller camps of nine luxury tents each, North and South, with separate central guest areas for each. This design keeps the atmosphere genuinely intimate. On our three-night stay, there were never more than a handful of couples visible at any one time, and the effect was of a place that felt almost entirely your own.

Location and How to Arrive

Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranged our scheduled flight from Wilson Airport to Kichwa Tembo’s private airstrip, a journey of approximately one hour. Air Kenya and Safarilink operate two scheduled flights daily on this route, and on clear mornings the descent over the Mara plains is a view worth the entire trip.

The camp is also accessible from Mombasa via Mombasa Air, a flight of approximately two hours. Road travel from Nairobi takes five to six hours along the Narok-Sekenani route and suits those who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Accommodation

Bateleur’s tented suites feel as though they were designed by someone who understood that on a honeymoon, the room itself is part of the experience. The interiors draw from the golden era of African safari travel: handcrafted artefacts collected across the continent, fine antiques, leather buttoned Chesterfield sofas, bookshelves, crystal glassware, and candles arranged on wooden surfaces worn smooth with age.

Our tent had hardwood floors, a king-size bed with layers of soft linen, and a private veranda where two deep chairs faced the open plains. The star bath, a signature of Bateleur’s design, is positioned so that you lie in warm water looking up through the canvas at the night sky. The first time Amara used it she called me in to see, and we sat there in the steam and the quiet, watching a satellite cross the stars above the Mara.

Each suite has an indoor and outdoor shower, a private deck, and views across the conservancy. Refreshing lap pools in both camps provide relief between game drives on warmer afternoons.

Dining at Bateleur Camp

Meals at Bateleur are served in settings that change with the time of day and the weather, and that variability keeps the dining experience from ever becoming routine. Breakfast might arrive at a table set beside the Oloololo Escarpment, with the sound of the plains and a spread of eggs, freshly baked bread, fresh juice, and Kenyan coffee. Lunch is typically served back at camp, light and flavourful, with the pool shimmering nearby.

Dinner is where Bateleur truly excels. One evening our table was set out on the viewing deck beneath a sky so thick with stars that Amara kept losing her train of thought mid-sentence looking up. The food was a multi-course meal that moved between African and international influences, with meats that had been slowly prepared over fire and desserts that involved locally sourced honey and fruits. Bush meals and bush breakfasts are available on request, and the boma, a traditional circular fire enclosure, hosts special dinners by arrangement.

Activities to do at andBeyond Bateleur Camp

The game drives here are extraordinary, and I say that having been on game drives before that I thought I would never top. The conservancy’s location means wildlife movement is exceptional year-round, and from July to October the Great Migration routes directly through Kichwa Tembo, bringing thousands of wildebeest and zebra on their circuit between the Serengeti and the Mara.

One of our morning drives produced a sighting we still talk about: a pride of lions with cubs moving through long grass in the early light, amber and slow. Our guide tracked them with a patience and skill that made us feel like we were witnessing something that had nothing to do with tourism and everything to do with the land itself.

Night drives in the conservancy reveal a completely different cast of characters: civets, servals, bush babies, and on one memorable occasion a leopard moving through the scrub just ahead of the vehicle’s beam. Guided bush walks with Maasai rangers are available and offer an intimate ground-level understanding of the ecosystem. Hot air balloon safaris and community excursions to Maasai villages can be arranged at additional cost.

The camp also has a well-equipped gym and a massage sala offering wellness treatments, which proved an excellent way to spend a mid-afternoon when the wildlife was resting in the heat.

Why Bateleur Is the Perfect Honeymoon Camp

The intimacy of the camp’s two-camp structure, the design that pays homage to safari’s most romantic era, the quality of guiding, the food, the night drives: all of these combine to create an experience that feels specifically designed for two people who want to feel genuinely transported. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can pair the stay with a rose petal turndown, champagne on arrival, a private bush dinner, and other honeymoon-specific touches that make a stay into a memory.

It is even possible to exchange vows at Bateleur with the Mara plains and riverine forest as your backdrop. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can assist with arrangements for bush weddings and elopement packages at the camp.
