Aberdare Country Club

Kenya Acccommodation

Aberdare Country Club

There is a particular quality that the Aberdare highlands carry in the late afternoon, when the light comes in low through the cedar and podocarpus forest and the air carries a clean, cool smell of altitude and rain. Aberdare Country Club sits in this landscape with the ease of something that belongs here, a property that has been part of the central highlands for decades and wears its history comfortably.
My husband and I chose the Aberdares as an addition to our Kenya honeymoon at the suggestion of Africa Bed of Roses Safaris, who described it as an entirely different dimension of Kenya from the savannah parks. They were entirely right. The Aberdares are montane forest, fog, giant forest buffalo, black and white colobus, and the remarkable ark wildlife of the highland ecosystem.

The Club and Its Setting

Aberdare Country Club serves as the base and arrival point for guests staying at The Ark, the famous tree hotel built above a floodlit waterhole in the Aberdare National Park. The Country Club itself is a gracious colonial-era property set in 100 acres of well-tended grounds with views of Mount Kinangop and the highland landscape.

The club is located approximately 170 kilometres from Nairobi and two and a half hours by road, sitting at an elevation of about 2,200 metres where the evenings are cool and the mornings have a quality of freshness that is profoundly restorative after the heat of

Accommodation

Rooms at the Country Club are colonial in style: high ceilings, well-made furniture, quality linens, and an elegant restraint in the decor that feels appropriate to the highland setting. Log fires in the rooms are available for the cool highland evenings, and there is something undeniably romantic about lying in bed listening to the forest rain on the roof with a fire burning nearby.

Suites are available for honeymoon couples and offer additional space and private sitting areas. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranged a special honeymoon room for us with rose petals and wine on arrival, which gave the first evening a warmth that set the tone beautifully.

Dining

The club’s restaurant occupies a handsome dining room with views of the grounds and the forest beyond. The menu draws from both classical and contemporary cooking, with local ingredients from the surrounding highlands including fresh produce, trout, and the Kenyan teas and coffees that grow at this altitude.

Activities

The primary activity from Aberdare Country Club is the transfer to The Ark for an overnight stay at the waterhole, where guests can watch forest buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard, and a variety of other species from the lodge’s decks and underground bunker throughout the night. Fishing for trout in the Aberdare streams, horse riding, and walks through the highland forest are also available.

Frequently Asked Questions About

Aberdare Country Club

The Ark stays are booked separately and are typically combined with the Country Club as a two-night experience. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can arrange both as part of a broader Kenya itinerary.

Aberdare Country Club sits on the slopes of Mweiga Hill in the Aberdare Highlands, within a 1,300-acre private wildlife sanctuary just 15 minutes outside Nyeri Town in Nyeri County. The property borders the Aberdare National Park and enjoys views of both Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. It is approximately 190 kilometres from Nairobi, making it one of the more accessible highland safari destinations in the country for honeymooners combining a wildlife stay with the journey from Nairobi.

By road the drive from Nairobi takes approximately three hours. By air, a one-hour flight from Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airstrip is followed by a 45-minute drive to the club. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges all transfers as part of your honeymoon package.

Accommodation is in the form of cottages and suites spread across the sanctuary grounds. The options include 19 two-bedroom cottages, one three-bedroom cottage, one five-bedroom cottage, and one standard suite. For honeymooners specifically, the recommended options are Honey Suckle, The Nursery Cottage, Kinangop Cottage, the two deluxe rooms, and the VIP Suite. The two deluxe rooms sit within The Nursery and Kinangop cottages with their own private entrances and no interconnecting doors to adjoining rooms, giving couples a self-contained and genuinely private base within the property.

The 1,300-acre sanctuary surrounding the club is home to impalas, zebras, giraffes, and leopards, all of which can be encountered during guided walks and game drives on the property. Within the wider Aberdare National Park, guests encounter elephants, buffalo, hyenas, and leopard more readily than lion, which are present but rarely sighted in the Aberdares. The park also supports over 290 bird species, making it a strong destination for birdwatchers.

The activity range at Aberdare Country Club is broader than most safari properties in Kenya. Game drives through the Aberdare National Park and guided walks through the sanctuary cover wildlife viewing and birdwatching. A nine-hole golf course set directly inside the game sanctuary allows guests to play a round with giraffes and impalas as occasional companions. Horseback riding through the property with experienced guides, mountain biking on trails with Mount Kenya views, and jogging tracks ranging from five to fourteen kilometres offer active alternatives to the vehicle-based safari experience. The heated outdoor swimming pool, spa with massages and body treatments, a fully equipped health club with gym, sauna and steam bath, and outdoor tennis courts round out the leisure options. Bush breakfasts, picnics within the sanctuary with Chardonnay and Mount Kenya views, sundowners, and private dining can all be arranged. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris recommends building the sanctuary picnic and a horseback ride into your Aberdare honeymoon stay as experiences that are simply not available at most other properties.

The main restaurant in the central building serves first-class cuisine across European, Asian, and Kenyan dishes. The lounge bar has a working fireplace suited to the cooler highland evenings, with comfortable leather sofas and a warm atmosphere for unwinding after a day outdoors. Picnics within the sanctuary can be arranged for guests who want a more informal outdoor dining option, and bush breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and sundowners are available with prior arrangement.

The club has a heated outdoor swimming pool, a health club and spa with gym, aerobics and Pilates section, sauna, steam bath, and massage and body therapy treatments, a nine-hole golf course, outdoor tennis courts, horse riding facilities, free Wi-Fi across the property and in all rooms, a gift shop, a business centre, and wheelchair-accessible rooms. Some cottages include working fireplaces, minibars, and refrigerators, which are particularly welcome given the cooler temperatures of the Aberdare Highlands at altitude.

The Aberdares offer a Kenya that most visitors never reach, a cooler, forested highland world that feels entirely different from the open savannah of the south. The country club format means honeymooners have access to a range of activities that go well beyond the standard game drive, from horseback riding and golf to spa treatments and mountain biking, all within a private sanctuary where wildlife moves freely around the grounds. The proximity to Nairobi makes it a practical first or final stop on a Kenya honeymoon itinerary, and the highland setting with Mount Kenya visible across the landscape gives the stay a quality of scenery that is hard to match elsewhere. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris includes Aberdare Country Club in select Kenya honeymoon itineraries for couples who want depth and variety in their destination choices.
