Akagera National Park covers 1,122 square kilometres of savannah, woodland, wetlands, and lakes along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania. It is the only Big Five reserve in Rwanda and home to over 12,000 large mammals, 500 bird species, and ecosystems that range from open grassland to papyrus swamp to montane woodland.
The park has an extraordinary conservation story. By the early 2000s, Akagera had been severely degraded by human encroachment and poaching, with the large predator populations almost entirely eliminated. In 2010, the Rwandan government partnered with African Parks, a non-profit conservation organisation, to rehabilitate and manage the park. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017, and the park’s recovery in the decade since has been one of the most celebrated conservation successes in Africa.
Travelling in Akagera now, you encounter the evidence of this recovery at every turn. Lion prides are re-establishing territories. Rhinos are breeding. The wetland system, which is the largest protected wetland in central Africa, supports a bird population that makes serious birders genuinely emotional.
Mantis Akagera Game Lodge stands on a hill at the southern tip of Akagera National Park, elevated above the savannah with exceptional views of Lake Ihema, the park’s largest lake. The lodge is part of the Mantis Hotels collection under the Accor group, and the standard of facilities and service reflects the group’s international hospitality standards applied to a genuinely wild African setting.
The elevated position means that wildlife is visible from the lodge itself: hippos in the lake below, buffalo on the grassland slopes, and an extraordinary variety of waterbirds using the lakeshore throughout the day. The pool deck, positioned at the front of the lodge facing the lake, is one of the finest safari views in Rwanda.
The lodge has 60 air-conditioned rooms and suites, including standard rooms, balcony rooms, a balcony suite, family suites, and a presidential suite. Rooms are styled in contemporary African decor with warm tones, local materials, and a design sensibility that connects the interior to the surrounding landscape.
Balcony rooms on the first floor offer elevated lake views and are the recommended category for honeymoon couples. The balcony suite provides additional space with a lounge area and exceptional views. The presidential suite, designed for up to four guests, has its own kitchen, dining room, and private patio overlooking the hills and valleys of the national park.
All rooms have king or twin bed configurations, ensuite bathrooms with hot water, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a minibar stocked with water and wine on arrival, and the full range of modern hotel amenities. After the more intimate tented camps of our circuit, the comfort of a properly appointed hotel room felt like a specific and welcome luxury.
The lodge’s chefs use fresh, locally grown produce, some sourced from the lodge’s own gardens, to create menus that celebrate Rwandan flavours alongside international cooking. Meals are served in the main dining room with lake views, or outdoors on the terrace and at the boma area for evening gatherings around the fire.
The pool bar serves drinks and light meals throughout the day, and the indoor and outdoor bar areas are well-stocked with local and international wines, beers, and spirits. Intimate candlelit dinners can be arranged for couples, and the team at the lodge is warm and genuinely invested in ensuring that the experience matches the setting.

Game drives within Akagera National Park are the primary activity, conducted morning and evening in 4×4 vehicles with professional guides and trackers. The park’s recovery means that the wildlife experience improves year on year, and current drives regularly produce sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino, leopard, and the enormous variety of plains game and wetland species that Akagera supports.
The Kazinga Channel-style boat safari on Lake Ihema is a highlight of every Akagera visit: cruising the lake at dawn or dusk, with hippos surfacing around the boat and shoebill storks visible in the papyrus margins, is one of East Africa’s quietest and most rewarding wildlife experiences. The shoebill in particular, a prehistoric-looking bird that is one of Africa’s most sought-after sightings, is reliably found in Akagera’s wetlands and provides a photographic experience that serious birders travel great distances to achieve.
Walking safaris led by expert ranger guides and trackers are available and offer an intimate ground-level experience of the park’s landscape. Night drives reveal Akagera’s nocturnal wildlife, including civets, genets, and various owl species. The Walk Line Experience, a guided walk along the park’s perimeter, provides context for the conservation story that Akagera represents.
Behind-the-scenes tours give guests access to the park’s conservation and management operations, including the rhino monitoring programme and community partnership work. These tours are particularly meaningful for couples who want to understand the deeper story behind what they are experiencing on the game drives.
The lodge is approximately two and a half hours by road from Kigali, heading northeast toward the Tanzanian border. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges all transfers as part of the Rwanda honeymoon package. Note that the park’s gates close at 6 pm, so arrival should be planned to reach the park entrance before that time.
The gorillas of Volcanoes make Rwanda famous. But Akagera makes Rwanda complete. A Rwanda honeymoon that combines the volcanic highlands and the gorillas with the open savannah, the lake country, and the Big Five experience of Akagera covers the full breadth of what this small, extraordinary country offers. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris designs the combination itinerary as standard for Rwanda honeymoon couples.
Akagera offers a different experience: the park is smaller and the wildlife is in recovery rather than at the density of the great East African reserves. But the intimacy and the conservation story make every sighting deeply meaningful, and the rhino and lion experiences are exceptional.
The shoebill is one of Akagera’s most celebrated species and is found in the park’s papyrus wetlands year-round. Sightings during the lake boat safari are reasonably reliable with knowledgeable guides.
Mantis Akagera Game Lodge sits in the southern sector of Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda, approximately 110 kilometres from Kigali. The park borders Tanzania and covers a landscape of savannah, woodland, and lakes, with Lake Ihema directly accessible from the lodge for boat-based wildlife viewing. For honeymooners combining a Rwanda gorilla trekking experience with a traditional savannah safari, Akagera offers a compelling and often overlooked addition to the itinerary.
There are no scheduled fixed-wing domestic flights serving the park, so guests arrive either by helicopter from Kigali International Airport, a journey of 25 to 30 minutes, or by road, which takes approximately two and a half to three hours. The helicopter option is the more dramatic arrival for honeymooners, with aerial views of the park’s lakes and savannah on the approach. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranges all transfers from Kigali as part of your Rwanda honeymoon package.
The lodge has 60 air-conditioned rooms across five categories, all styled with contemporary African décor and en-suite bathrooms. The 27 Standard Rooms on the ground floor are spacious enough to accommodate two children under twelve on rollaway beds. The 29 Balcony Rooms on the upper level offer elevated views of either the savannah or Lake Ihema and are a strong choice for honeymooners who want an outlook over the landscape from their own private balcony. The Balcony Suite adds a separate lounge area for additional privacy and relaxation. The two Family Suites each have three bedrooms, an open-plan lounge, and a kitchenette, suited to honeymooners travelling with family. The Presidential Suite is the most exclusive option, with two en-suite bedrooms accommodating up to four guests, a private patio, a fully fitted kitchen, and a dining room seating up to ten.
Guided game drives run as morning, afternoon, and full-day options through the park in search of the Big Five, which in Akagera includes lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Night game drives lasting approximately two and a half hours begin around 5:30pm using spotlights to find nocturnal species including hyena, leopard, and mongoose. The Lake Ihema Boat Cruise offers a completely different perspective on the park’s wildlife, with hippos, crocodiles, and water birds viewed from the water at close range. Birdwatching is exceptional throughout the park and lodge grounds, with over 500 recorded species including the rare Shoebill stork, which is one of the most sought-after bird sightings in East Africa. The Walk the Line guided hike covers seven kilometres along the park’s perimeter fence over approximately two hours, taking in high-ridge views and offering insight into the park’s active conservation and monitoring programme. Catch-and-release fishing tournaments on Lake Shakani targeting tilapia and catfish are held periodically and can be enquired about through the lodge management.
Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah national park and one of the most underrated Big Five destinations in East Africa. The park’s recent conservation success, including the reintroduction of lion and rhino after decades of absence, means game viewing is improving rapidly and the sense of witnessing something still being built carries a particular kind of meaning. Combined with the lake boat cruise, the rare birdlife, and the lodge’s contemporary design and elevated balcony views, Akagera makes a natural complement to a Rwanda honeymoon that begins with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris regularly combines both parks into a single Rwanda honeymoon itinerary for couples who want the full range of the country’s extraordinary wildlife experiences.
Contact Africa Bed of Roses Safaris to include Mantis Akagera Game Lodge in your Rwanda honeymoon itinerary as part of a complete circuit combining gorillas, Big Five, and forest primates.
