Lake Manyara Tortilis Camp sits within a private conservancy adjacent to Lake Manyara National Park, near the town of Mto Wa Mbu at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The conservancy covers a landscape of acacia woodland, open grassland, and seasonal wetlands that attract a wide variety of birdlife and plains game.
The camp is named for the acacia tortilis tree, and the flat-topped umbrella thorns that grow across the conservancy give the landscape a silhouette quality at sunset that is characteristic of the Rift Valley photography aesthetic.
Tented suites at the camp are spacious and comfortable, with private verandas, king or twin bed configurations, ensuite bathrooms with hot water, and a design that draws from the natural materials and colours of the surrounding landscape. The verandas face out toward either the conservancy or the escarpment, and in the mornings the light on the valley walls goes through colours that no filter can replicate.
Meals are served in the main lodge area or outdoors, with a kitchen that produces fresh, well-seasoned food from local ingredients. The camp’s all-inclusive approach covers most drinks, and the team is warm and attentive in a way that feels personal rather than procedural.

Game drives within Lake Manyara National Park and the private conservancy are the primary activities. Cultural visits to Mto Wa Mbu, one of Tanzania’s most culturally diverse towns, and canoe safaris on the lake where flamingos feed in the shallows are both excellent additions to the wildlife drives.
Lake Manyara Tortilis Camp sits at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment inside Lake Manyara National Park, on the western side of the lake approximately 11 kilometres from Manyara Airport. The position within the park places guests in the middle of active wilderness, with wildlife moving through and around the camp throughout the day and night. Hippos, elephants, buffalo, ibis, eagles, and flamingos are all regularly visible from the tents and the communal seating area in front of the rooms, and the sunrise over the lake from camp is one of the more quietly spectacular views on the northern Tanzania circuit.
Lake Manyara is a compact park that packs an extraordinary diversity of landscapes and wildlife into a relatively small area. The giant soda lake dominates the park’s western edge and hosts thousands of flamingos for much of the year alongside pelicans, ibis, storks, kingfishers, hornbills, weavers, and eagles, making it one of Tanzania’s premier birdwatching destinations with over 90 recorded species. The park is also celebrated for its tree-climbing lions, a behaviour seen in very few places in Africa, as well as troops of baboons, zebra, elephant, hippo, and buffalo. The Great Rift Valley escarpment provides a dramatic backdrop throughout, and the ultra-diverse ecosystems from groundwater forest to open lake shore support an unusual breadth of wildlife for a park of its size.
The camp has ten safari-themed tents with local authentic decor and en-suite facilities including a toilet, shower, and hand basin. All tents are spacious with clean bedding and well-maintained bathroom areas. King-size and twin bed configurations are available, and an additional bed can be provided for families travelling with children. Every tent and the restaurant look directly out over the lake and surrounding wildlife, and the seating area in front of the tents with chairs, sofas, and a partial open viewing aspect gives guests a protected but genuinely immersive position from which to watch the lake and its creatures. The partial screening from the seating area also provides a degree of protection from the tsetse flies that can be active in the park.
Double room rates on a full-board basis start from USD 148.50 per person per night. In addition to the room rate, Lake Manyara National Park entry fees and statutory camping fees of USD 59 to 71 per person per night apply. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris factors all park fees into your overall Tanzania honeymoon budget at the planning stage so the full cost is clear before booking.
Staying between December and June is particularly rewarding, as wildlife activity around the lake is at its most visible and varied during this period. The flamingo population is present for much of the year. For birdwatching, the November through April period brings migratory species to the lake including storks and pelicans alongside the resident population. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris advises on how a Manyara stop fits within your broader northern Tanzania honeymoon itinerary depending on travel dates.
Game drives through Lake Manyara National Park cover tree-climbing lions, elephant, hippo, buffalo, baboon, zebra, and the park’s exceptional birdlife. Birdwatching is one of the strongest activities at this particular camp given the lake’s proximity and the diversity of species visible from the tents and seating area without any vehicle. Bicycle riding, cultural interactions with communities near the park, bush sundowners, and bush lunches in the field add variety to the programme. Guests are accompanied by a guide when moving between tents and the dining area after dark, as wildlife moves freely through the camp grounds at night.
The camp has a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor fireplace, laundry service, mosquito nets, seating area, kid-friendly buffet, special diet menus, and Wi-Fi, though internet speed can be slow given the remote location. The food has been well rated by guests and the kitchen accommodates special dietary requirements on request.
