Hemingways Ol Seki Mara

There is a tree in the Maasai language called ol seki, the sandpaper tree, and it symbolises peace and harmony. Standing on the rocky bluff where Hemingways Ol Seki Mara is perched, looking out across the Naboisho Conservancy in every direction, I understood exactly why the camp chose that name. This is a place built around the idea of peace. Not the artificial quiet of a spa resort, but the deep, full, real peace of the African wilderness on a morning when no one else is visible in any direction and the lions have gone quiet after a night of calling.
My wife Priya and I chose Ol Seki for our honeymoon after Africa Bed of Roses Safaris described it as the kind of camp that changes how you think about luxury. We had asked for intimacy, privacy, and something that would feel genuinely special rather than just expensive. They were right on every count.

The Camp and Its Setting

Hemingways Ol Seki Mara sits within the exclusive Mara Naboisho Conservancy in southwestern Kenya, a 50,000-acre private reserve that borders the Masai Mara National Reserve to the south. The conservancy is jointly managed by the Maasai landowners and a small group of safari camps, which means visitor numbers are strictly controlled. On a morning game drive here, you might encounter one other vehicle across several hours, a contrast from the busier tracks of the main reserve that is quietly extraordinary.

The name Hemingways points to the collection of four high-quality Kenyan properties that Ol Seki belongs to, and the standard of the group is reflected clearly in how the camp operates. There are just ten luxury tents plus two exclusive two-bedroom villas, accommodating a maximum of around 26 guests, which means the atmosphere is almost always intimate.

Location and Getting There

Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranged our flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Ol Seki Naboisho Airstrip, a journey of approximately one hour. A camp vehicle met us on the airstrip and the drive to camp through the conservancy was our first proper introduction to Naboisho’s landscape, rolling grassland, rocky outcrops, and distant hills that caught the afternoon light in shades of gold and copper.

The camp is also accessible by road from Nairobi, a drive of roughly five to six hours, for guests who want to take in the Rift Valley scenery on the way. For those staying at the camp’s two-bedroom villas, a private 4×4 vehicle with a dedicated driver and guide is included.

Accommodation

Each of Ol Seki’s tents is positioned on a private vantage point and offers a 270-degree view of the conservancy. The floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors open fully onto a large private deck, meaning the boundary between inside and outside is really a matter of temperature rather than architecture. The tents are nestled among cordia and acacia trees, and the birdlife that moves through these trees in the early morning is extraordinary, sunbirds, starlings, hornbills, and dozens of species I could not name.

Inside, the design is clean, warm, and deeply comfortable: a king-size bed, an indoor and outdoor shower, a freestanding bathtub with views across the plains, and a sitting area that invites a book and an afternoon of doing very little. Priya sat in that sitting area with a glass of wine on our second afternoon watching a herd of elephants cross the conservancy below, and she said quietly that she had never felt so fully present anywhere in her life.

The Ol Seki Cave Dining Experience

One of the camp’s most extraordinary offerings, and something Africa Bed of Roses Safaris specifically arranged for us, is the cave dinner. Below the main point of the camp there is a natural cave that was once inhabited by a traditional Maasai hunter. The cave has been converted into a private dining venue, lit with lanterns, with a table set inside the rock and the conservancy visible through the opening.

We ate there on our second evening: roasted chicken in a fragrant sauce, fresh vegetables sourced from local farms, and dessert that involved wild honey collected by Maasai beekeepers nearby. The experience of eating inside rock that has been inhabited by human beings for generations, in the middle of one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas, is something that resists easy description. It felt like the kind of dinner you remember for the rest of a marriage.

Beyond the cave, the camp’s mobile kitchen allows for picnic lunches on the plains and bush breakfasts, and dining within camp can be arranged in the communal mess area or privately on a couple’s own deck.

Activities

Game drives run twice daily with guides who are graduates of the Koiyaki Guiding School, established by the Naboisho Conservancy to produce some of Kenya’s most deeply trained safari guides. The quality of guiding at Ol Seki is something that guests consistently mention, and after three days with our guide, we fully understood why. He could track a cheetah by displacement in the grass from a moving vehicle, read animal behaviour with quiet certainty, and find humour in the bush that made even a long, slow drive feel like an education.

Night drives in the conservancy are included in stays of three nights or longer, as is a bush walk led by a Maasai naturalist. A full-day game drive into the Masai Mara National Reserve is available as an add-on activity.

Hot air balloon safaris over the Mara can be arranged through Africa Bed of Roses Safaris at an additional cost, and the flight, typically at dawn, is followed by a champagne breakfast in the open landscape below.

Frequently Asked Questions About

Hemingways Ol Seki Mara

Completely. The camp is welcoming, well-organised, and the guides are patient and thorough with first-time guests. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris provides additional briefing as part of the booking process.

Naboisho is a 50,000-acre private conservancy adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve, managed by Maasai landowners in partnership with a small number of safari camps. It offers much lower vehicle density than the main reserve and permits activities like night drives and walking safaris.

The villas are primarily designed for families or groups of friends, but they offer exceptional privacy and include a dedicated chef, butler, and private vehicle, making them a remarkable option for couples who want complete seclusion.
