Mahali Mzuri is part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection, a group of hand-selected retreats founded by Sir Richard Branson. The camp is located within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Kenya’s greater Masai Mara ecosystem, covering a landscape of over 13,500 hectares. Unlike the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, the conservancy limits the number of safari camps allowed to operate within its boundaries, which means fewer vehicles, quieter drives, and a feeling of having the wilderness largely to yourselves.
The camp sits on an elevated ridge, looking out across a sweeping valley where wildlife moves freely below. There are just 12 luxury tented suites, which keeps the experience intimate in a way that a larger property never quite can. Kofi and I felt this from the moment we arrived. There was no sense of crowds, no distant noise from other guests, just the vast, unhurried landscape unfolding in front of us.
Africa Bed of Roses Safaris arranged all the transport logistics seamlessly. We flew from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Olare Orok Airstrip, a flight of roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on the aircraft. From the airstrip, the camp’s team collected us in a safari vehicle, and the drive to camp through the conservancy was itself an introduction to what awaited. Within minutes of the road turning to open grassland, we spotted zebras, and Kofi quietly reached for my hand.
There is also the option to fly into Mara North Airstrip, which is a longer transfer to the camp of about an hour by road but gives guests an extended first game drive as part of the journey. Both options are easy to arrange and the camp welcomes guests arriving by either airstrip. Road travel from Nairobi is possible but takes approximately five to six hours and is generally recommended only for those who want to take in the scenery of the Rift Valley en route.
When I saw our tent for the first time, I genuinely stood in the doorway for a moment longer than was probably dignified. The suite was enormous, raised on a wooden deck with the ridge stretching out behind it and a private veranda facing the valley below. Inside, the design felt like a conversation between luxury and the landscape: warm earthy tones, handcrafted wood, a king-size bed dressed in crisp white linens, and a large open-plan bathroom with both an indoor shower and a deep soaking tub.
The floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the tent can be opened entirely, so the veranda and the interior become one connected space. In the mornings, we would lie in bed with the curtains drawn back, watching the sun come up over the conservancy while a pot of coffee arrived quietly from the kitchen. That ritual alone was worth the entire journey.
Ten of the 12 suites sleep two adults and can be configured as a king or twin setup. Two suites have an enclosed sitting area with additional sofa beds for families or guests who want extra space. Each suite is positioned along the ridge at enough distance from its neighbours that privacy is absolute.
Meals at Mahali Mzuri are included in the stay and served in the main tent or, on request, in settings out on the open plains for something more intimate. The chefs blend international and African flavours using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and the result is food that manages to feel both refined and honest.
Our most memorable dinner was a private bush dinner arranged by Africa Bed of Roses Safaris as a honeymoon surprise. A table was set beneath an acacia tree as the sun dropped behind the hills, candles flickering in the warm evening air, the distant sound of hyenas starting their night chorus somewhere across the valley. We ate grilled lamb with a slow-cooked relish and finished with a dessert that involved fresh mango and something involving Kenya-grown vanilla. It tasted of celebration.
Breakfast is typically served in the main tent with the valley visible through open sides, and lunches on returning from game drives are light and restorative. All meals, drinks, and twice-daily game drives are included in the full-board rate, which makes the experience genuinely all-encompassing.
Rates at Mahali Mzuri are per person per night on a full-board, all-inclusive basis.

Game drives are conducted twice daily in open 4×4 vehicles with professional Maasai guides and trackers whose knowledge of the conservancy is extraordinary. Morning drives head out before sunrise and often return with stories that fill entire dinners. Evening drives drift into spotlit night drives, which are only possible in the conservancy rather than the national reserve, making this location particularly special.
On one of our drives we spent nearly an hour watching a leopard in a tree with her kill. The guide, a quiet and deeply knowledgeable man named Joseph, spoke about the leopard in a way that made us understand her rather than just observe her. That was the quality that defined the guiding throughout.
Walking safaris are available within the conservancy and offer an entirely different dimension to the landscape. Moving quietly through the grass on foot, following tracks and learning to read the land the way the Maasai do, is an experience no vehicle can replicate.
Hot air balloon safaris over the Mara are available at an additional cost and are best arranged in advance through Africa Bed of Roses Safaris. Cultural visits to local Maasai communities can also be arranged, offering genuine and respectful engagement with the people who have lived alongside this wilderness for generations.
There is a quality of privacy here that is rare. With only 12 suites and a conservancy that limits visitor numbers, you are never competing for space or attention. The staff are warm without being intrusive. The landscape is spectacular without demanding anything of you. You can spend an entire afternoon on your veranda watching elephants move through the valley below, doing absolutely nothing else, and feel completely content.
Africa Bed of Roses Safaris offers tailored honeymoon packages for Mahali Mzuri that include special touches such as private bush dinners, rose petals, honeymoon cake, and dedicated check-ins to ensure everything is exactly as it should be.
The camp is open year-round. For the Great Migration, the peak period is July through October. For fewer crowds and more intimate drives, April through June offers excellent wildlife and a greener landscape.
Twice-daily game drives in the conservancy, all meals, standard drinks, laundry, and Wi-Fi are included. Hot air ballooning and Masai Mara National Reserve day visits incur additional charges.
The camp accepts children from two years of age, though due to the design of the decked walkways, it is more suitable for children aged six and above.
Fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Olare Orok or Mara North Airstrip. Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can arrange all domestic flight bookings as part of your honeymoon package.
Yes. Private vehicles can be arranged for an additional cost, which is especially recommended for honeymooners who want full flexibility during game drives.
For a first safari experience, Mahali Mzuri sets a standard that is genuinely hard to beat. The conservancy location means fewer vehicles on drives, the camp is small enough to feel personal, and the level of service is consistent throughout. Couples who stay here through Africa Bed of Roses Safaris often tell us it was the part of their honeymoon they talked about longest after returning home. If you are going to invest in one exceptional safari camp, this is a strong case for making it Mahali Mzuri.
Mahali Mzuri is owned in a partnership between Sir Richard Branson and the Gehlot family, a prominent Kenyan-based real estate and development group. It is operated as part of Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection, a carefully curated group of high-end retreats across the world. The camp sits within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in the greater Masai Mara ecosystem.
Rates vary by season and are charged per person sharing. During the low and green season, which typically runs from early January through mid-June and again from November through mid-December, rates start from around USD 1,100 per person per night. During peak season, covering mid-June through mid-October and the festive period, rates rise to around USD 1,600 per person per night or more. Solo travellers pay a single supplement on top of these figures. All rates are fully inclusive of accommodation, meals, drinks, twice-daily game drives, conservancy fees, and airstrip transfers.
Yes. The rate covers accommodation, all meals, a selection of drinks including alcoholic beverages, twice-daily game drives within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, laundry service, and transfers to and from the nearest airstrip. Optional extras such as hot air balloon safaris, spa treatments, and day visits into the Masai Mara National Reserve carry additional charges.
The kitchen draws on pan-African cuisine, working with bold flavours, aromatic spices, and ingredients inspired by cultures across the continent. Meals shift between the main dining tent, the outdoor terrace, and bush settings depending on the time of day and the mood of the camp. For honeymooners, Africa Bed of Roses Safaris can arrange private bush dinners as part of your package, which takes the dining experience into the wilderness entirely.
The core of the experience is twice-daily game drives through the conservancy with expert guides. Beyond that, guests can arrange hot air balloon safaris over the Mara at sunrise, guided bush walks, Maasai cultural visits, and spa treatments within the camp. The conservancy’s private status means drives operate without the vehicle congestion common in the main reserve, which makes a real difference to the quality of time spent in the field.
The camp has 12 luxury canvas tents, each with a curved contemporary design that sits comfortably against the landscape without feeling out of place in it. Inside, each tent has a plush master bedroom, an en-suite bathroom with a claw-foot tub and separate shower, a fully stocked minibar, and a private wooden deck looking out over the plains. Two of the tents are configured as family suites accommodating up to four guests. The main facilities include a large outdoor infinity pool, a tented lounge and bar, a sun terrace, and a spa.
The camp welcomes families and has two dedicated family suites designed to accommodate adults and children together. Children aged two to five stay free of charge, while children aged six to fifteen are charged at a reduced rate when sharing with adults. That said, the camp’s intimate atmosphere and open-air design make it equally well suited to couples, and honeymooners consistently find the setting as private and romantic as they need it to be.
Mahali Mzuri gave us something we did not know we needed as newlyweds: the experience of being completely present together in one of the most beautiful places on earth, without distraction or rush. If you are planning a honeymoon in Kenya and want a camp that will stay with you long after the tan fades and the luggage is unpacked, Mahali Mzuri is where you should be.
