2-Day Akagera National Park Big Five Wildlife Safari

Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah national park where game drives take place. This safari will feature game drives which offer opportunities to watch the big mammals that live here. These include zebras, hippos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, lions among others. There is a possibility of seeing the big five animals in two days since lions and black rhinos were recently re-introduced.

Tour Plan

Day 1 – Transfer to Akagera national park – Afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema

Start your day, from Kigali, Upon arrival in the park, you will go for a short guided game drive. You will then check into your Lodge, have lunch and after lunch, You will go for an afternoon for boat trip on Lake Ihema. You will watch lots of hippos and Crocodiles, Some basking on the shores of the lake. Look out for beautiful birds like fish eagles, Kingfishers, cormorants Among others. You will return to the lodge wait for your night game and back for dinner and overnight. Including park fees All transportation costs, accommodation costs, transport activities and taxes/VAT are required to be Included in the base Rate.

Day 2 – Game drive in Akagera national park

Today you will wake up early, have early breakfast and then head out into the park for a guided game drive. The park is home To different animals like Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, different Antelope species, and recently the re-introduced Lions and Rhinos. The park is also a bird watchers haven with over 500 bird species. The game drive will take about 6 hours. So you will leave the lodge with packed lunch. You will have a game drive en route to Kigali. You will arrive late in the evening.

7-Day Wildlife and Gorillas of Rwanda

You will combine game viewing in Akagera National Park with its varied wildlife with a gorilla trekking in Rwanda. This is a superb opportunity to not only view the gorillas but also to experience Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda.

Tour Plan

Day 1 – Arrival in Kigali

You will arrive at the airport, collect your luggage and go through customs. You will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to the guest house. You will spend the rest of the day at leisure, depending on your time of arrival, we can include a guided day trip, as per your preferences. The meals on this day are at your own expense. You can talk to the hotel to assist you with restaurant bookings, or we can book a dinner bed and breakfast option.

Day 2 – Travel to Akagera National Park

You’ll wake up early and depart to the east of the country to Akagera National Park. A packed breakfast will be organized for you to enjoy en route. You will check in at the luxury Magashi Camp and relax before the afternoon game activity. Afterwards, you’ll return to the lodge in time for dinner and an overnight stay. Everything about Magashi is a thrilling quest. You will watch elephants near the camp submerge in the lake’s silvery blue waters. You will drive across miles of open savannah tracking rhinos, giraffes, and lions. You can try your hand at catch-and-release fishing, watched by a shy sitatunga, and listen to the stories of the land during a traditional Kugisha supper around a roaring fire with friends old and new.

Day 3-4 – Experience Game Viewing at Akagera National Park

Gear up for thrilling game drives during your stay. A wildlife sighting is always unpredictable and that’s what makes a game drive so exciting. You will look out for tracks, listen for alarm calls, and be on alert for nearby predators. You will also have the opportunity to view the abundant bird and wildlife from a boating safari. There’s so much to see, and being the first to spot something brings a whole new level of satisfaction to your day.

Day 5 – Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early departure today to reach the mountainous region and gorilla territory. You will arrive at the lodge late afternoon and have time to freshen up before dinner. This is a long day of driving through the wonderful countryside; including a lunch stop in Kigali. It is possible to organize a helicopter transfer (if the weather permits), contact us for the price of this option.

Day 6 – Gorilla Trekking at Volcanoes National Park

This morning you will depart early to the park headquarters for a briefing. Once you are briefed on the gorilla family your group is trekking (small group per tracker), you’ll walk through the tropical rainforest in search of the mountain gorillas. You may find them doing their daily chores of feeding their young ones, climbing trees, and just relaxing. You will have about 1 hour with the gorillas, and then return to the headquarters. You’ll transfer back to the lodge in time for a late lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure to relax. It is possible to hike around the lodge or chat with your guide if you would like to book a cultural activity (not included). Your dinner and an overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 7 – Return to Kigali

You will have breakfast and then check out. You will be transferred by road to Kigali Airport, including an orientation tour of the city and the Genocide Memorial. Your meals are at your own expense today.

Tour Plan

Day 1 – Kigali-Akagera ( 2h30) Afternoon Game drive

07h30: Set off for Akagera National Park. We will stop briefly en route for a rapid antigen test. 10h30: Arrive and proceed to the park offices for briefing and formalities. Start your game drive en route to the camp. Have an afternoon game drive en route to the camp. Arrive and check in, followed by lunch. The game drive in Akagera National Park provides you with the opportunity to view gentle hills blending beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. Akagera National Park is located in eastern Rwanda and is known for its diverse wildlife and birdlife. The park is home to over 12,000 large mammals, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and giraffes, as well as various antelope species such as impalas, bushbucks, and topis. During game drives, you will get to spot these animals in their natural habitat. Return to camp before sunset. Dinner and overnight stay. (We can book accommodation before your tour or we can pick you up from the airport in the early morning.).

Day 2 Akagera National Park (Boatride and game drive)

Have a leisurely breakfast at the camp. 08h00: Transfer to the jetty at Lake Ihema. 09h00: Board and proceed on a 1 hour guided boat ride. Lining the lakes are some of the continent’s densest concentrations of water birds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek, and the bizarre shoebill stork – the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds. Once through, you will continue a full-day game drive in the park going into the Northern part and the kilala plains. Have a lunch break at Lake Mihindi Restaurant. You will then return to the camp later but before sunset. You will have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3 – Akagera National Park ( Game Drive & Night Game Drive)

Have a leisurely breakfast at the camp. Set off for a morning and Mid-morning game drive. In addition to its impressive mammal population, Akagera is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 bird species found in the park. Bird enthusiasts can look out for the rare shoebill stork, as well as various eagles, kingfishers, herons, and other water birds along the park’s lakes and wetlands. Overall, Akagera National Park offers a unique wildlife and birdlife experience in the heart of Rwanda and is definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in nature and conservation. Lunch will be at the camp. Relax as you listen to the noises of the birds, monkeys and hippos. 17h00: Your night game drive guide will come and pick you up then you will proceed on a game drive until 20h30. Return to the camp. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 – Drive back to Kigali ( 2h30 drive)

On this day, you will have a leisurely breakfast at the camp. Check out and settle any extras. By 9h00, start your morning game drive en route to the North. Lunch will be at Lake Mihindi restaurant. Continue your Afternoon game drive through Kilala plains to the North exit. Have a toilet break at the park restrooms. Set off for Kigali by 16h00. Arrive by 20h00 and drop off at your hotel or residence. We can book accommodation or get you to Kigali international airport in time for your air transfer if you have a schedule.

This 3-day safari takes you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and Volcanoes National Park. You will see the twin lakes, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, trek gorillas and golden monkeys, and have a cultural experience to see how the local king reigns over his tribe. The tour concludes with a visit to a local market.

Tour Plan

Day 1 – Visit Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival, your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, commemorating the 1994 genocide of 250 000 Tutsi tribe. This memorial also educates about how the genocide against the Tutsi took shape and examines genocide in the 20th century. Spending time here is very emotional, so brace yourself to shed a few tears. After the memorial centre visit, we will depart for Volcanoes National Park.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, your driver guide will transfer you to the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park for a briefing at 7:00am. Here, you will be divided into groups, and a ranger guide will accompany you into the jungle. You will walk for approximately 1-2 hours before you meet the primates. Upon meeting them, you will have 1 hour to watch them play, feed, and go about their daily life as you take photographs or videos. Then, you head back to the starting point to meet your driver guide, who will transfer you to the next activity. Next is a cultural dance experience hosted by ex-poachers. You will enter an environment where a king reigns and watch an authentic traditional medicine man try out his concoction. You will also see the local milling stone and observe traditional marriage rituals under a king’s reign.

Day 3 – Golden Monkey Tracking, Twin Lakes and Return to Kigali

After breakfast, you will drive to Volcanoes National Park’s headquarters for a briefing on the do’s and don’ts while tracking golden monkeys. You will be assigned a guide who will lead you on your expedition to find the golden monkeys. From here, you will return to Kigali and, en route, see the beautiful twin lakes, Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. The scenes are picturesque, and you are welcome to take photos or videos—be sure that you will be left in awe of the beauty of the surroundings! Finally, you will embark on your journey to the city, which may include a stop at a local market. The market is the perfect place to see how the local Rwandan people do their daily business.
