Items Excluded from Mombasa Safari Packages Price

Let Africa Bed of Roses Safaris clarify what’s not included in your Mombasa package, ensuring complete transparency in your travel planning. Understanding these exclusions helps you budget appropriately and avoid any unexpected expenses during your coastal adventure.

  1. International Travel Considerations

Your journey to and from Mombasa requires separate arrangements for international flights. This exclusion allows you the flexibility to choose your preferred airline and routing, potentially using frequent flyer programs or taking advantage of special fare offers. When booking your flights, consider arrival and departure times that align comfortably with our transfer schedule.

  1. Personal Expenditures

During your stay, you’ll likely want to purchase souvenirs, make personal phone calls, or engage in additional activities. These personal expenses remain separate from the package price. We strongly recommend securing comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and lost baggage. This becomes particularly important when traveling in regions where medical facilities might differ from those at home.

  1. Entry Requirements

For visitors from outside East Africa, visa requirements apply. These fees remain separate from your package price. The process for obtaining a Kenyan visa has been streamlined through an online system, but the associated costs and responsibility for securing the proper documentation rest with the traveler.

  1. Hotel Extras

While your accommodation includes standard services, additional hotel amenities like laundry, room service, spa treatments, or special activities carry separate charges. These services, though convenient, should be budgeted for separately if you plan to use them.

  1. Optional Experiences

During your stay, you might discover additional activities or experiences not included in the original itinerary. These could range from extra water sports at Diani Beach to specialized shopping excursions. While our guides can help arrange these activities, their costs remain separate from the package price.

Understanding these exclusions helps create a more complete picture of your travel budget. We recommend setting aside an appropriate amount for these additional expenses to ensure a comfortable and worry-free coastal experience. Our team remains available to help you estimate potential costs for any specific items or activities you’re interested in pursuing during your stay.

Remember that while these items are excluded from the package price, they represent opportunities to customize your experience according to your personal preferences and interests. Mombasa Kenya FAQ

1.Where is Mombasa or rather where is Mombasa Located?

Mombasa Location in the map of kenya
Mombasa Location in the map of kenya

Mombasa is Kenya’s second-largest city and the country’s premier coastal destination, located along the Indian Ocean coastline in southeastern Kenya. The city sits on a small coral island connected to the mainland by several bridges and ferries, which adds to its unique charm and character. It’s approximately 485 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city.

The city’s strategic location has historically made it one of East Africa’s most important port cities, serving not only Kenya but also neighboring countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of Tanzania. If you’re looking at a map, you’ll find Mombasa situated roughly at 4°03’S latitude and 39°40’E longitude, making it perfectly positioned to enjoy a tropical climate year-round.

What makes Mombasa particularly special is how it’s naturally divided into two parts ,  the island (which houses the historic Old Town and Fort Jesus) and the mainland areas including the northern, western, and southern mainland. The famous beaches like Nyali, Bamburi, and Shanzu are found on the northern mainland, while Diani Beach lies to the south. This unique geography creates distinct areas each with their own character, from bustling city streets to serene beach locations, all within easy reach of each other.

  1. Things to do in Mombasa
things to do in mombasa kenya

There’s an incredible variety of things to do in Mombasa that cater to every type of traveler. Let me share some of the most interesting things to do in Mombasa Kenya.

Historical and Cultural Attractions:

The iconic Fort Jesus is a must-visit 16th-century Portuguese fortress that tells the story of Mombasa’s rich colonial history. Walking through the Old Town’s narrow streets, you’ll discover intricate Swahili architecture, ancient wooden doors, and local artisans at work. The famous Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue, built in 1952, have become a symbol of the city and make for a perfect photo opportunity.

Beach and Water Activities:

Mombasa’s pristine beaches offer everything from simple relaxation to adventure. At Diani Beach, you can try kite surfing, jet skiing, or go on glass-bottom boat rides to view coral reefs. Nyali and Bamburi beaches are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while more experienced divers can explore numerous dive sites teeming with marine life.

Wildlife and Nature Experiences:

Haller Park, once a barren cement quarry and now a thriving ecosystem, offers close encounters with giraffes, hippos, and various bird species. The Mombasa Marine National Park provides excellent snorkeling opportunities, while Shimba Hills National Reserve, just a short drive away, is home to the rare sable antelope and coastal elephants.

Food and Dining:

Experience the local cuisine at authentic Swahili restaurants in the Old Town, where you can try dishes like biryani, pilau, and fresh seafood. The famous Tamarind Restaurant offers high-end dining with ocean views, while beach bars and cafes serve fresh coconuts and local dishes right on the sand.

Shopping and Markets:

Visit the bustling Kongowea Market for a true local shopping experience, browse for souvenirs at the Bombolulu Workshops, or explore modern shopping centers like Nyali Centre. The spice markets offer a sensory experience where you can buy local spices and traditional medicines.

Cultural Experiences:

Watch traditional Swahili dances at cultural centers, visit local mosques (with appropriate dress and permission), and experience the blend of African, Arab, and European influences that make Mombasa’s culture unique. The Bombolulu Workshops provide insights into local crafts and offer opportunities to support disabled artisans.

Island Excursions:

Take a dhow trip to Wasini Island for dolphin watching and snorkeling, or visit the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park for an unforgettable marine experience. These trips usually include fresh seafood lunches and opportunities to interact with local island communities.

Evening Entertainment:

End your days at beachfront restaurants with live music, enjoy sundowners at rooftop bars overlooking the ocean, or experience the nightlife at various clubs and entertainment venues along the beach strips.

Remember, many of these activities can be affected by tides, weather, and seasonal changes, so it’s always good to check local conditions and plan accordingly. Also, some sites like Fort Jesus and marine parks have entrance fees, so it’s worth carrying some cash with you.

  1. is Mombasa safe

Wondering whether is Mombasa safe? Mombasa, like many tourist destinations, is generally safe for visitors, but it’s important to be aware and take common-sense precautions. Let us break this down realistically:

For Tourists in Main Areas:

The main tourist areas, including beach resorts, popular attractions like Fort Jesus, and major shopping centers, are well-patrolled and safe. Most hotels and resorts have good security measures in place, including guards and surveillance systems. Our tour package ensures you’re always accompanied by experienced guides who know the area well and prioritize your safety.

Transportation Safety:

When traveling around Mombasa, it’s best to use official transportation services. Our package provides private vehicles with professional drivers who know the safest routes and areas. If you’re moving around independently, use registered taxis or ride-hailing services rather than walking alone, especially at night.

Beach Safety:

The beach areas are generally safe during daylight hours, particularly in front of major hotels. However, be aware of:

– Beach boys (local vendors) who can be persistent but are usually harmless

– Swimming conditions (always check with your hotel about safe swimming areas)

– Keep valuables in your hotel safe rather than taking them to the beach

Practical Safety Tips:

– Keep valuable items in your hotel safe

– Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics

– Stay alert in crowded areas like markets

– Stick to well-lit, populated areas after dark

– Keep a copy of important documents

– Have emergency numbers handy (which we provide)

– Follow local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites or local communities

Health Safety:

– Drink bottled water

– Eat at recommended restaurants

– Use mosquito repellent

– Keep basic medications handy

– Major hospitals are available if needed

The Reality:

While petty theft can occur like in any major city, violent crime against tourists is rare. Most visitors experience a safe and enjoyable stay, particularly when traveling with reputable tour operators like us who prioritize guest safety and provide local guidance.

Remember, our tour package includes professional guides and drivers who are familiar with the area and ensure you can explore Mombasa safely while enjoying all it has to offer.

  1. Is Mombasa safe for solo women travellers?

Most solo women travelers who would like to visit Mombasa Kenya for their vacations wonder is Mombasa safe for solo women travelers? Yes Mombasa is safe for solo women on vacations and it’s a rewarding destination for solo women travellers but always proper precautions should be taken. The city’s main tourist areas, including beachfront resorts, established hotels, and popular attractions like Fort Jesus and Nyali Centre, provide secure environments with professional staff and 24/7 security. These areas are well-monitored and frequently visited by international travellers, creating a comfortable atmosphere for women exploring on their own.

However, it’s important to understand and respect the local cultural context. Mombasa has a significant Muslim population with conservative values, so dressing modestly while exploring the Old Town, markets, and local neighborhoods is highly recommended. While beach attire is perfectly acceptable at resorts and private beaches, covering up more when moving through the city helps avoid unwanted attention and shows respect for local customs.

For the most comfortable experience, solo women travellers should take some practical precautions. These include choosing well-reviewed hotels in safe areas, using trusted transportation services rather than walking alone (especially at night), keeping valuables secure, and maintaining awareness of surroundings particularly in crowded areas or markets. Many solo traveller’s find joining guided tours or group activities to be an excellent way to explore the city safely while meeting other travellers. With these considerations in mind and proper planning, women traveling alone can fully enjoy Mombasa’s rich cultural heritage, beautiful beaches, and warm hospitality.

  1. Is Mombasa good for tourists?

At Africa Bed of Roses Safaris, we’re incredibly proud to showcase Mombasa to our guests, and I can tell you from our years of experience organizing tours here, it’s an absolute gem for tourists. Having hosted thousands of visitors over the years, we consistently see our guests fall in love with this coastal paradise. The blend of pristine beaches, rich culture, and endless activities keeps bringing people back, and many of our first-time visitors end up booking return trips with us.

Let me tell you what makes Mombasa truly special from a local tour operator’s perspective. We’ve seen how our guests’ eyes light up when they first walk through the winding streets of the Old Town, or when they catch their first glimpse of the Indian Ocean from their beachfront resort. The city offers something for everyone – whether you’re a history buff exploring Fort Jesus (which has the most fascinating stories our guides love to share), a beach enthusiast looking to unwind on Diani’s white sands, or a foodie eager to try authentic Swahili cuisine. What’s particularly wonderful is how you can experience all of this while enjoying modern comforts and excellent service at our carefully selected partner hotels and resorts.

I’ll be honest, what really makes our job rewarding is seeing how our guests react to the genuine warmth of Mombasa’s people. Tourism is in our blood here, and we pride ourselves on going beyond the usual cookie-cutter tours. Whether it’s arranging a private dhow cruise at sunset, organizing a special dinner at a local family’s home, or setting up unique photography opportunities at the Mombasa Tusks, we’ve seen countless visitors transform from tourists to true lovers of our coastal paradise. Trust me, after organizing tours here for years, I can confidently say that if you’re wondering whether Mombasa is good for tourists? it’s not just good, it’s exceptional, and we can’t wait to show you why.

  1. What is Mombasa best known for?

As someone who’s deeply familiar with Mombasa, let me share what makes our coastal city truly special. Mombasa is best known as Kenya’s captivating coastal gem, where centuries of maritime history blend seamlessly with beachside luxury. The iconic Fort Jesus, standing proudly since 1593, tells tales of Portuguese, Arab, and British influences, making it not just a monument but a symbol of our rich cultural heritage.

Our city is famous for its stunning beaches places like Diani, which has repeatedly been voted among Africa’s finest beaches. The powdery white sand and turquoise waters of our coastline have become synonymous with tropical paradise. Local beach life here is vibrant yet laid-back, where you might find yourself sipping fresh coconut water while watching traditional dhow sailboats glide across the horizon, their wooden frames a testament to centuries-old shipbuilding traditions.

Mombasa’s distinctive Swahili culture sets it apart from any other destination in East Africa. You can experience this in our Old Town, where intricately carved wooden doors tell stories of ancient traders, and narrow alleyways lead to hidden courtyards and traditional spice markets. The aromatic Swahili cuisine, blending African, Arab, and Indian influences, adds another layer to our city’s fame – think freshly caught seafood prepared with coconut, fragrant pilau rice, and the sweet aroma of cardamom coffee served in tiny traditional cups. The famous Mombasa Tusks arching over Moi Avenue have become a symbol of our city, representing both our history as a gateway to East Africa and our welcoming spirit to visitors from around the world. 1. Is Mombasa safe for American tourists?

As a tour operator who regularly hosts American tourists in Mombasa, I can assure you that Mombasa is generally safe for American visitors, particularly when traveling with reputable tour companies like Africa Bed of Roses Safaris. We’ve welcomed countless American guests over the years, and their experiences have consistently been positive and enriching when proper precautions are taken.

From our experience, American tourists feel most comfortable and secure when staying in the established tourist areas, which is exactly where we focus our tours and accommodations. The beachfront resorts, popular attractions, and main tourist zones are well-patrolled and maintain good security standards. Our American guests particularly appreciate that we provide private transportation with experienced drivers and local guides who know the area intimately, eliminating any concerns about navigation or safety in unfamiliar territory.

Let me be candid though,  like any major tourist destination, it’s important to practice common-sense precautions. We always advise our American guests to keep valuables in hotel safes, avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics, and stick to recommended areas, especially after dark. The good news is that when you’re traveling with us, you’ll have 24/7 support, pre-arranged secure transportation, and carefully vetted accommodations and activities. Many of our American clients tell us they felt safer than expected, thanks to the warm hospitality of locals and our comprehensive tour support. Most safety concerns can be easily managed with proper planning and guidance, which is exactly what we provide throughout your stay in Mombasa.

8.How should I dress in Mombasa?

As someone who guides visitors through Mombasa daily, let me share some practical advice about dressing appropriately in our coastal city. Mombasa has a unique blend of beach culture and conservative Muslim traditions, so dressing here requires a bit of thoughtful planning depending on where you’re going.

For beach and resort areas, you can dress quite casually, swimwear, shorts, sundresses, and light beach clothing are perfectly acceptable. Most tourists spend their days in comfortable, light clothing suitable for our warm tropical climate. At your beach resort, you’ll feel completely at ease in your regular vacation wear. However, when heading to dinner at upscale resort restaurants, smart casual attire is appreciated – think collared shirts for men and elegant resort wear for women.

The most important consideration comes when venturing into the city, especially around the Old Town, local markets, or religious sites. Here’s where cultural sensitivity is key. We recommend:

– Women: Knee-length or longer skirts/dresses/pants, tops that cover the shoulders and aren’t too revealing, and having a light scarf handy for visiting religious sites

– Men: Long shorts or trousers, t-shirts or shirts with sleeves (avoiding sleeveless tops)

– Both: Avoid very tight or revealing clothing when exploring local areas

– Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy sandals or walking shoes for exploring, as streets can be uneven

Remember to pack light, breathable fabrics, Mombasa’s climate is warm and humid year-round. Cotton and linen are your best friends here. And don’t worry too much, if you forget something, our local markets and shops have everything you might need.

  1. What is the best month to visit Mombasa?

As a local tour operator who’s witnessed Mombasa’s seasons year after year, let me share the best times to visit our coastal paradise. The most popular and arguably the best months to visit Mombasa are from July to October and December to March. These periods offer the most pleasant weather conditions and optimal conditions for beach activities and sightseeing.

July to October is particularly fantastic because it’s our dry season with lower humidity levels. The temperatures hover around 25-28°C (77-82°F), making it perfect for exploring Fort Jesus, wandering through the Old Town, or enjoying water sports at Diani Beach. The ocean is calm and crystal clear during these months, ideal for snorkeling and diving adventures. Plus, you’ll find the beaches less crowded than during the peak December-January holiday season, meaning better rates at hotels and more personal attention on tours.

December through March is our high season, especially popular with visitors escaping winter in their home countries. The weather is warm and mostly dry, though you might experience occasional short showers in December. Christmas and New Year periods are particularly vibrant with festive activities, but keep in mind that this is also when prices peak and advance bookings are essential. If you’re looking for the absolute sweet spot, I’d recommend September-October, you’ll get perfect weather, reasonable prices, and fewer crowds. Just avoid the long rains from April to June, when afternoon showers can interrupt beach plans and some water activities might be limited due to rougher seas.

  • Can you swim in the ocean in Mombasa?

At Africa Bed of Roses Safaris, we get this question a lot, and the answer is absolutely yes. Swimming in Mombasa’s Indian Ocean waters is one of the most enjoyable activities for our guests. With water temperatures averaging a pleasant 25-28°C (77-82°F) year-round, it’s like swimming in a warm bath.

The best swimming spots are along our beach areas like Nyali, Bamburi, and especially Diani Beach. From our experience organizing beach activities for guests, we’ve found that the most enjoyable swimming times are during mid-morning and late afternoon when the sun isn’t too intense. Some of our favorite swimming spots are the protected lagoons near the major beach resorts, where the water is calm and crystal clear. Diani Beach, in particular, offers perfect swimming conditions with its powdery white sand and gentle slope into the ocean.

However, as locals who know these waters well, we always share some important tips with our guests. Pay attention to the tides – low tide can expose coral reefs and make swimming less enjoyable. High tide usually offers the best swimming conditions. We recommend swimming in designated areas near hotels and public beaches where lifeguards are present. Also, it’s worth noting that during the monsoon seasons (particularly April-May), the ocean can be a bit rougher, so we advise our guests to be more cautious during these times. And here’s a local tip: bring water shoes if you plan to swim near coral areas, they’ll make your ocean experience much more comfortable.

  • Are there sharks near Mombasa?

At Africa Bed of Roses Safaris, we want to be completely honest with our guests about this common concern. Yes, there are sharks in the waters around Mombasa, but here’s what you really need to know – shark encounters in our swimming and tourist areas are extremely rare, and there’s a very important reason for this.

The majority of our popular swimming beaches, including Nyali, Bamburi, and Diani, are protected by coral reefs that create natural lagoons. These reef barriers keep larger marine life, including sharks, away from the swimming areas. In our many years of operating tours and working with local beach operators, we’ve never encountered problems with sharks in these tourist swimming zones. The sharks that do exist in the Indian Ocean typically stay in deeper waters well beyond the reefs.

Let me put your mind at ease, swimming in Mombasa is safe when you follow basic guidelines. Our popular beaches have lifeguards, and local operators who’ve been working these waters for decades know the safest spots for swimming and water activities. If you’re interested in seeing sharks, we can actually arrange proper shark watching tours with professional diving companies – that’s the only time our guests typically encounter these magnificent creatures. The most common species in our deeper waters are reef sharks, which are generally not aggressive toward humans. Remember, millions of tourists swim in our waters each year without incident, and the ocean is one of the main reasons they keep coming back to visit us.

  • Are there crocodiles in Mombasa?

As a local tour operator in Mombasa, let me address your concern about crocodiles with some straight facts. No, you won’t find crocodiles in Mombasa’s main beach areas or tourist swimming spots. The saltwater of the Indian Ocean isn’t a natural habitat for crocodiles, so you can relax and enjoy your beach time without worrying about these reptiles.

However, since you asked, I should mention that there are some crocodiles in specific locations around the greater Mombasa area, but these are in controlled environments or inland waterways. For example, you can see crocodiles safely at Haller Park, which is actually included in our tour packages. It’s a nature park where crocodiles live in designated areas, completely separate from visitor zones. There are also some crocodiles in the mainland’s creek areas and mangrove swamps, but these are far from tourist areas and not places where our tours or activities take place.

Let me reassure you, in my years of organizing tours in Mombasa, none of our guests have ever encountered a crocodile outside of controlled environments like Haller Park. Your beach vacation, water sports, and ocean swimming activities are completely safe from crocodiles. The only place you need to have your camera ready for a crocodile photo is during our guided visit to Haller Park, where you can observe these fascinating creatures from a safe viewing distance.

  • Can you see dolphins in Mombasa?

Yes, dolphins are one of our most exciting attractions here in Mombasa! At Africa Bed of Roses Safaris, dolphin watching is actually one of our most popular activities, particularly during our Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park excursions. The joy on our guests’ faces when they spot their first dolphin never gets old.

The best place to see dolphins is in the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, about an hour and a half drive from Mombasa. Here, we regularly encounter several species, including bottlenose dolphins and humpback dolphins. They’re particularly active in the early morning, which is why we start our dolphin-watching tours early. The clear waters and protected marine environment make this area a natural playground for these intelligent creatures. From our experience, the success rate of spotting dolphins during these trips is quite high, especially between November and March when the waters are calmest.

Let me share a local tip, if you’re keen on seeing dolphins, book a full-day trip that combines dolphin watching with snorkeling. This way, you not only get to see dolphins playing in their natural habitat but also have a chance to experience the vibrant coral reefs and marine life that make our waters so special. On these trips, we provide comfortable boats with experienced skippers who know exactly where to find the dolphins, and we include a delicious seafood lunch on Wasini Island to make it a complete coastal experience. Just remember to bring your camera, dolphins can be quite playful and often provide perfect photo opportunities.

The reserve is famous for the great annual wildebeest migration and all year round exceptional and abundant wildlife. It’s also the home to the Big Five. You will enjoy a thrilling African savannah experience on a luxury tour.

Tour Plan

Wherever you go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyenas, topis, impalas, wildebeests, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and hippos. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably common. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the camp.

Early mornings and late afternoons are considered the best time to spot animals as they are most active.
