I have always heard this conversation about luxury safari camps however; nothing prepared me for what I personally experienced in Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp. Arrival Experience: The Journey into the Wild

Regardless of the number of times you’ve flown into the Masai Mara, the descent from the sky always feels different each time feels more like a blessing. As the plane approached the airstrip, through the window I could see the vast plain dotted with antelopes, zebras and dark shadows of elephants grazing.

And now the moment I was awaiting finally came to pass and I set my foot on the warm earth which made me feel like the world had stopped for a minute.

He then proceeded to offer me a cold towel infused with eucalyptus and leman glass as he was handing me a chilled hibiscus drink. Theres that natural smell of the plains mixed with a soft breeze created a sense of serenity that I hadn’t thought of in my life.

We then proceeded to the transfer which felt like a little private game drive. The short ride to the camp was my first game drive I won’t deny it; this is among the few moments I’ve been waiting in my entire life.

 A few minutes into the drive we could see a herd of elephants walking across open grasslands I was so amazed then he called and told me to look on my left side and is saw a cheetah stretched lazily on a termite mound.

Further to the left I could see wildebeests and zebras grazing peacefully on the endless plains. As we drove into the rugged terrain of the endless plains near some acacia trees, we spotted a leopard dragging its kill into a tree which was close to the road my goodness! My heart almost stopped I’ve never been such close to the leopard this was the closest I’ve been to a wild animal.

Making way into Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp is subtly breathtaking and worth the time I took to visit the place. As most people would think that there is a huge gate opening right into the luxury camp or an intrusive type of architecture, no this wasn’t the case. It was just a beautifully curated welcoming space that perfectly blends with nature giving you the sense of peace and tranquillity. 

As I said before the surprises that I met this day were never ending because as we approach the entrance of the camp, we were welcomed by a welcoming team that stood singing traditional Maasai melodies. The beautiful melodies echoed gently across the landscape which made me feel that it was not just hospitality but an art, warmth and heritage all combined in one spot.

As we were settling down, I was offered another drink as I we listened to a gentle briefing and within minutes my butler came and leaned over and whispered “Your tent is ready” This were the words that I had been waiting all this time to have myself inside the Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp.

I was curious about the type of tents that we would be given as part of our accommodation. Well, I know when you hear the word “tent” they think of a simple canvas with a bed inside. However, the tents at Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp have a redefined meaning as they are expertly designed to meet modern standards that brings luxury into the heart of the savannah. Let’s talk a little bit about the experience inside these modern tents.

The Bedroom

The room was enormous, then on one side there was a king-size bed draped in silky linens. It had a handcrafted wooden headboard inspired by Maasai beadwork which I really loved just leaning on it.

I loved the warm, soft lighting that creates a glowing sunset ambiance at night it made me sleep like a kid. Around the room there were handwoven rugs and locally made décor.

The floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto your private deck was an amazing architectural move for the rooms. What I noticed about these bedrooms at Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp is every detail is intentional and each design element has a purpose.

Private Deck

From my private deck i had the perfect view of almost anything as, I had a front-row view of the river. This meant that on a daily basis I had sightings of hippos splashing the water in the river and elephants drinking just meters away.

Morning hours used to be among my best times as I could be woken up by birds chirping at sunrise. By the time I move the blinders away from the windows to let in sunlight, monkeys were occasionally jumping from tree to tree.

I remember one beautiful morning; I watched three elephants walk gracefully past while I was sipping my coffee. On another evening, I saw a lioness drinking quietly at the riverbank.

The Bathroom

Well, for the bathroom I think it deserves its own paragraph or novel to just give it the proper description. It featured a deep soaking tub facing the plains and an outdoor shower where I bathed under the stars

It was fitted with double sinks with brass fittings the flooring was fitted with warm stone floors. It had luxurious toiletries inspired by African botanicals. For me the outdoor shower was my addiction. I liked taking showers at sunset, with the sky glowing orange and purple, water cascading down my back, and the distant roar of lions it felt like the world had paused in admiration.

Butler Service

Oh! I how can I forget about My butler, Ngatia? He was like a guardian angel he would bring morning coffee on my deck. He ensured snacks are delivered to me before game drives. He would ensure that I have warm water bottles placed in my bed at night. Generally, he was managing all my preferences and surprises. In most places, luxury is often defined by material things however, here, it is defined by care.

Dining and Culinary Experience: Fine Dining in the Bush

Dining at Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp is not just mouth watering and impressive but it’s an extra ordinary experience one you can only get from this place. Each bite of the meal felt like its curated and not cooked just like any other foods.  

Breakfast

Breakfasts were served in different locations either in the dining area, on the river deck or on a bush breakfast. These locations had been arranged by Africa Holiday Safaris and they were the perfect spots to have each meal of the day. I used to have fresh pastries straight from the oven, eggs made to order and Kenyan coffee which made me feel heavenly! I can’t forget the tropical fruits sweeter than honey.

 I liked the smoked meats and sausages as part of my meal made from local honey from Maasai beekeepers. My absolute highlight was the bush breakfast. Sitting under an acacia tree, with giraffes in the distance and monkeys watching curiously, eating pancakes and sipping fresh juice it felt unreal.

Lunch

Lunches used to be light and packed with lots of flavour among my favourite dishes included grilled fish with lime, beetroots and goat cheese salads, coconut chicken curry.

I enjoyed the freshly baked breads and vegetables sourced from local communities which gave me the local vibe during the stay. As we can all agree everything was healthy, flavourful, and extremely fresh.

Dinner

Since the first day I stepped my foot at Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp, the dinners were mesmerizing. The set up included candlelit tables which gave me a wild vibe with crackling fire pits made the entire dinner event unforgettable for me. As we were having dinner we could hear soft Maasai chants.

I used to have gourmet multi-course meals while staying at this camp. From my personal experience some of the standout dishes included, lamb slow-cooked with African spices, pan-seared salmon with herb sauce, rich mushroom soup and chocolate desserts infused with Kenyan vanilla.

There is this one night, it felt like a scene from a luxury safari movie when they surprised us with a bush dinner, enjoying the gourmet meals under the stars hearing the distant roars and the torches.

  The Big Five: All in one day

Within the first day I was able to see a huge lion pride wondering in the endless plains with cubs. I also got a chance to see a female leopard dragging her kill, thanks to my pair of binoculars I could make the details clearer from a far.

A rhino was grazing quietly and on the other side near a water stream there were more than just a herd of elephants bathing. The buffalo herd was so huge that the earth seemed to tremble as they fought each other. I mean every sighting on this day was intimate respectful and unharried.

The Great Migration: My Unforgettable Moment

I know the peak season had already passed however, I still witnessed thousands of wildebeests still moving across the grasslands. Each time they moved they left a rising dust behind them and the thundering hooves alongside zebrass calling made me overwhelmed. It felt like I’m there witnessing and ancient ritual that has not been changed for years.

Sunset Drive: The Hour of Beauty

Sunset in the Mara feels different as its not the same or just like any time of the day, it’s a celebration. My guide drove the cruiser and we parked on a hill with the sky a blaze with red and gold. We could hear lions calling from a far, and Ngatia my guide handed me a cold drink and he said to me, “This is your Mara magic hour.” With whatever was happening around us and the view we had in sight, indeed he was right.

Spa and Relaxation

I couldn’t end my stay without having a good session at the spa. Well, the experience was gentle, calming, and deeply grounding. I booked a 60-minute Maasai herbal massage which was very relaxing and calming to the body mind and soul you cannot miss this one out while in Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp.

I also did get a foot scrub with volcanic stone and a scalp treatment with coconut oils. The good thing with the services at the massage is that all treatments used natural ingredients sourced locally. After the massage, I slept so deeply that even nearby hippo noises couldn’t wake me.

Maasai Culture Immersion

During my stay there I had the opportunity to interact with the Maasai ‘s Africa Bed of Roses safaris arranged a visit to a nearby Maasai village. For me I think this was one of the most emotional parts of my trip. As we drove deep into the village and arrived to the pre arranged destination, the Maasai welcomed us with dances and stories which were both hilarious and amazing.

They were so kind to show us how they build their traditional houses “the manyatta” using mud mixed with cow dung. They showed us how they start fires without matches and it was nothing but pure fun, I had the opportunity to try the same though it was tough. They showed us how they create their beadworks and where each piece should be worn.

I even participated in the famous Maasai jumping dance and let’s just say… the warriors jump very high in the air. For me it wasn’t just a tour it was a cultural connection as I felt more love towards the Maasai people which I feel you will love them too.

Make sure you pack the right clothes such as warm clothes for dawn drives. To keep your memories alive then you should bring a good camera. Given this once in a lifetime opportunity kindly make sure the take the sunset bath I used to love it.

Once you are in the camp you can always try to choose at least one bush dining experience. When set at this camp you are very close to sighting an enjoying the wildebeest migration which takes place between July and October.
