My Unforgettable Trip at Mara Maisha Camp

My Unforgettable Trip at Mara Maisha Camp

Travelling with family hits differently, especially when it includes your parents and siblings.

It’s one thing to go on a safari alone or with your friends, as I did with my friends, to celebrate my birthday at Mara Serena Safari Lodge, and it’s something else to take your whole family to the Masai Mara.

That is exactly what happened during our stay at Mara Maisha Camp. A trip that brought us closer in ways we did not expect.

For years, we have been talking about going on a family safari, but life always got in the way of work, deadlines, school schedules, responsibilities, and everyday routines.

Finally, the opportunity came, and we never looked back. That was during our December holidays.

That clearly showed that we will be celebrating Christmas in the Masai Mara. We were all excited and set to go.

One thing about my family, we hate last-minute rushes. We needed to take at least two months to plan and prepare for this trip to avoid disappointments.

Immediately, everyone started comparing the Masai Mara packages, looking for the right fit for a family group from different tour operators, and then we could settle on the best.

Out of three searches from each of us, we finally settled on Africa Bed of Roses safaris

You may ask why we settled with Africa Bed of Roses safaris among hundreds of tour companies.

Here are the  reasons:

  • As we did our research, hundreds of tour companies promised to offer the best experiences, but Africa Bed of Roses safaris kept standing out again and again.
  • Their online presence felt genuine, their communication was instant, and every review we read echoed the same message, which was consistency, professionalism, and memorable experiences.
  • They were very transparent with their packages, rates, inclusions, and experiences.

Later, after the whole family was okay with Africa Bed of Roses safaris, I went ahead and gave them a call to inquire and secure our slot for Mara Maisha.

A professional and friendly tour consultant answered my call, listened to me keenly and attentively, answered all the questions I had till it was clear.

After an hour or so, she shared the family package and the itinerary in detail for the understanding of everyone.

For sure, they helped us choose what was perfect for my family, and we could enjoy it to the very end.

The customer service made us feel safe and valued even before the trip started.

In a world full of uncertainty, Africa Bed of Roses safaris felt like a company we could trust, and choosing them made us feel like the best decision ever.

The Family Package We Chose

We finally settled for the 3-day 2-night family package. A decision that perfectly balanced comfort, adventure, and value for money.

This package came with everything we needed, which included:

  • Transport
  • Accommodation
  • Park Fees
  • Meals

Are you planning a family safari and you are looking for a trusted, professional, and friendly tour company? Bed of Roses safaris is your answer.

History of The Mara Maisha Camp

What most people do not know is that the story of the Mara Maisha Camp did not start with luxury tents or sundowners overlooking the savannah.

It started with a dream, a dream to preserve a little corner of the Mara and blend with comfort, but still respect the wild.

Long before we checked in as a family, excited for our family safari, the founders of the Mara Maisha Camp had already been in this land, guided by the Masai elders who helped them understand the rhythm of the wildlife and its seasons.

The founders wanted to create a place that felt alive. In December 2021, Mara Maisha Camp was established. “Maisha” means “life.”

Another thing that fascinated us about Mara Maisha was the sustainable philosophy behind the camp’s construction.

They did not begin by designing rooms and choosing furniture. They began by observing:

  • Where do the wild animals cross?
  • Where do birds nest?
  • Where does the sunset appear more beautifully?
  • Where does the wind travel?

Once you get to the Mara Maisha Camp, you will realize that no tree feels out of place, no animal path is blocked, and you will also see how the tents sit naturally as they grow from the earth.

My father, who loves nature documentaries, his favourite being “ Life in Colour” by David Attenborough, kept pointing out how the camp blends into the environment, then said to us “ This is how tourism should be.” He was very impressed.

Every family that stays here brings something new, but also every family finds itself immersed in the camp’s history.

For us, it was the small things which included:

  • My parents smiling with each other like young lovers during the sunset.
  • My younger siblings ran back to the tent after spotting Zebras and Elephants at the pool.

One of the biggest truths about the Mara Maisha Camp is that the camp’s history does not end only in books but continues in the hearts of families who visit.

Stay tuned and enjoy Mara Maisha with us.

The Journey to Mara Maisha Camp

We started our journey very early in the morning, while the sky was still soft with dawn, as we excitedly loaded our family car with our suitcases.

If you are from an African home like I am, prayers are very Key before starting a journey, after arrival, and during the journey back home.

Therefore, my mom led in prayers and dedicated our journey to the Masai Mara National Reserve to God.

 Road Option

Africa Bed of Roses safaris had communicated to us that the journey will start at 6:00 AM, and our pick-up point will be the Junction Mall, where we will be picked up by a 4*4 Land Cruiser, perfect for the family safari.

We were on time, and the driver also never kept us waiting.

Immediately, we got in the Land Cruiser with my dad sitting at the front, and the rest of us sat at the back. We were good to go.

As we drove out of the city, the landscapes slowly shifted. Buildings and apartments in Nairobi paved the way for the open landscapes.

The open landscapes stretched into rolling hills. Within a few hours, the Kenyan countryside unfolded.

As we covered every kilometre, it felt like shedding a layer of everyday life that is work stress, deadlines, and routines.

My mom could not believe this was happening. I felt the same.

We were not just going for a weekend getaway at the Mara, we were going for an experience we would talk about for years.

The drive down to the Mara is a journey in itself. It was scenic and full of small, magical moments that make you appreciate the simplicity of travel.

We passed through roadside markets with fresh fruits neatly arranged, children waving as we drove by, and stretches of the savannah teasing us that we were not ready for what was waiting for us on the other side.

At one point, we stopped to take a breather before we continued with the rest of the journey.

My younger siblings could not help but run around pretending to be mini tour guides while pointing out imaginary Elephants and Lions.

My parents and I just stood there smiling, soaking in the moment.

As we approached Narok, the sense of adventure grew even stronger.

It was like the road itself understood that you were heading into one of the world’s greatest wildlife reserves, and immediately, you start preparing your heart for it.

Flight Option

As a traveller, I came to realize that not everyone enjoys long drives. And that’s perfectly ok.

Some travellers prefer to start their Masai Mara journey with the gentle hum of aircraft engines, and the thrill of take-offs fills their souls.

You do not have to worry, Africa Bed of Roses safaris makes it possible for you, and that’s the beauty of travelling with them.

They will explain the best airlines for your dates, help you choose the perfect airstrip closest to Mara Maisha, break down the luggage rules for you, and even tell you the perfect flight time to match your check-in.

With Africa Bed of Roses safaris, you are not left guessing anything.

NOTE: Kids may receive discounts depending on the airline and age.

Accommodation

The moment we drove through the entrance of Mara Maisha Camp, it felt like stepping into a different world.

The noise of the city, the dust of the road, and the long drive all melted away as the camp’s warmth and atmosphere embraced us.

Our guide was already waiting for us, greeting us with a genuine smile on his face that made us feel instantly at home.

Our suitcases and bags were offloaded from the cruiser.

First Impression & Hospitality

While we were at the reception, checking in, we were offered cold towels and a cold drink. What a welcoming gesture.

Later, one of the staff showed us around the camp, pointing out to us the small details that make the camp special, which include:

  • Dining Area with panoramic views
  • Swimming pool
  • Cozy fireplace for evening storytelling
  • Craftshop  tucked near the main lodge

First Family Game Drive

No sooner had we unpacked than our guide was ready to whisk us off for our first game drive.

My younger siblings were practically vibrating with excitement as we got into the open-roof Land Cruiser, and then I saw dad whispering to mom, “ Can you imagine this is just the first day?”

This meant they were very excited too. I smiled.

Within minutes, the Mara started unfolding around us. Giraffes grazed lazily around acacia trees as Zebras swayed their hips as they crossed to the other side.

We were more than ready to see more. Every stop to see the wild felt like a new story.

It was magical.

The Evening Camp

After the game drive, we returned to Mara Maisha Camp as the sun dipped low. Painting the sky with shades of orange and gold.

Before dinner, we took our time to settle in and freshen up after the long journey and the game drive and also rest a little bit.

2 hours later, dinner was ready.

Dinner was a quiet, intimate family affair under the stars as lanterns lit our table and the faint sounds of the land created a soundtrack that city life could never offer.

It was at this point that we realized that Mara Maisha Camp is not just a place to stay but a place to live the Mara together as a family.

The first day, travellers are usually very tired, hence, after dinner, my family and I headed back to our tents and called it a night.

The tents felt like a small universe of comfort, not hotel kind of comfort but safari kind of comfort, which was soft, thoughtful and deeply connected to nature.

Some of the features of the tents that we loved were;

  • Hot showers after long, dusty drives
  • Enough charging ports so that we do not have to fight for outlets
  • Instant hot water bottles are placed in the bed at night
  • The thick duvet is perfect for chilly, cold nights, especially for children

Best Things To Do With Your Family When You Visit Mara Maisha

Did you know that a family safari is not just ticking wild animals off a checklist?

It is more of reconnecting, laughing together, discovering new things and creating those remember when stories that will come up during family dinners even after years.

Therefore, at Mara Maisha Camp, every activity feels like it was meant to make families bond effortlessly.

Here is how our 3-day 2-night unfolded beautifully, meaningfully and full of magic.

1. Sunrise Game Drive

The Masai Mara at sunrise, I can tell you for free, it is a show while you and your family take the VIP seats.

On this sunrise, we spotted the following:

  • Lions returning from the night hunt
  • Elephants walking in a slow, majestic line
  • Giraffes stretching into the sunrise
  • Hyenas laughing in the distance
  • Wildebeest scattered on the grass

2. Bush Breakfast

Bush breakfast is always the best for parents and their children

Imagine after the beautiful sunrise game drive, you stop at a beautiful open spot surrounded by acacia trees and 360-degree views.

Here, the table is set, the air smells fresh, and everyone is wide-eyed because of excitement.

I promise you breakfast tastes better out here. The scrambled eggs,  fruits, Mandazis, and coffee are just on another level.

The scenes are just beautiful when your family eats together, laughs together, takes photos and plays silly games.

It is simple, but it becomes one of those memories that sit deeply in your heart.

3. Village Cultural Visit

A family visiting the Masai village is one of the most educational moments.

During this village, you learn the following:

  • How the Masai live
  • Their traditions
  • Their songs and dances
  • Their beadwork and crafts
  • Their relationship with wildlife

Children are not left behind either. My younger siblings really had fun while:

  • Learning to throw the Masai Spear
  • Jumping competitions
  • Watching the goats and cows
  • Trying to bead

The exercises were very warm and interactive for them.

4. Bonfire Evening

Nightfall at Mara  Maisha Camp feels like turning a new chapter.

During this time, each of us was given a Masai Shuka that we used to wrap ourselves in from the cold.

My parents chose the seats closest to the fire, my younger siblings huddled together on one side, while on the other hand, I took a seat facing all of them, where I got to observe everyone’s reaction.

This was our bonding session. Conversations slowly melted into old childhood stories, the mysterious things we did growing up, the embarrassing things we swore never to repeat and dreams we rarely mentioned at home, but it felt safe sharing under the Mara dark sky.

We teased each other, we laughed till our side ribs hurt, and we created new memories at the same time.

These are the kind of memories never forget, and Mara Maisha Camp made it possible for us.
