If there is a place that makes me want to go back to Masai Mara for like a million times is the Jambo Mara Safari Lodge. I’m saying this because prior to visiting Jambo Mara Safari Lodge, I only used to hear about its spacious wooden rooms, peaceful setting and serenity near Talek area, however, nothing prepared me for the actual experience that I was going to get.

Getting the right company to travel with to Jambo Mara Safari Lodge wasn’t a problem as I booked my safari through Africa Bed of Roses safaris, a leading tour and travel company dedicated to showcasing the best of Africa’s breathtaking beauty, culture and wildlife. They always know how to match travellers with the perfect lodges they need for the many times I’ve travelled with them I’ve never regretted choosing Africa Bed of Roses safaris.
So, for this safari I wanted to experience something different from what I’ve been doing in my safaris. Most importantly I wanted something close to wildlife, comfortable, unique and not overly commercialized and the only place that turned out to have these aspects and much more was Jambo Mara Safari Lodge.
I’m glad to share with you my personal experience from the moment I arrived at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge till my check out time. I know you might be considering to do a Masai Mara safari and still wondering where to stay but let me take you through everything that I loved about Jambo Mara Safari Lodge and maybe mention a few things they can improve to make this beautiful property much better.
Location: A Beautiful Retreat in the Heart of the Masai Mara
Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is a luxurious and eco friendly lodge in Masai Mara National Reserve. It is located in one of the most wildlife dense regions of the Masai Mara 11 KM away from the Sekenani Gate which is the main gate.
Its also 20 KM away from the Keekrokor airstrip and 220KM away from Nairobi. It’s surrounded by indigenous forest, open plains and vibrant birdlife, it offers visitors a peaceful stay while keeping them close to prime safari action.
The Journey to Jambo Mara Safari Lodge
After consulting with Africa Bed of Roses safaris about my safari at the Mara and my accommodation at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge over the weekend I was ready to start my journey. I was picked from my home in Nairobi then we took the route via Narok and here is where the adventure begins. From Narok onwards the view was elegant as the drive to the lodge was a safari on its own.

Seated and tucked well on the comfortable land cruiser 4×4 seat at the back left side of the vehicle I had a good view as I couldn’t just get enough of seeing the endless plains stretching out besides us.
And within a few kilometres drive past Narok town I started spotting zebras and wildebeests and I couldn’t hold back the joy in my heart seeing these wild animals even before entering the reserve? It was like a preview or a snippet to me of what I’m going to experience.
First Impressions: A smooth check-in & Warm Staff
If there’s a smooth check-in I’ve ever had while in the Masai Mara was at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge. With such a smooth check-in what else do you expect? Well, the reception area was a piece of African art finely crafted as it has a rustic but elegant interior which I’m sure you will all like it when you set your foot at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge.
Everything at the reception area was just giving everyone a positive energy as the staffs were very friendly and welcoming. The staff welcomed us and offered us fresh juice and warm towels, this is just a small detail but after a long drive on the dusty roads it felt lovely. We were accompanied by the receptionist who elaborated to us the time for taking meals, lodge facilities and safari schedules. As the receptionist was explaining the details in my mind, I was just imagining myself in a wilderness paradise.
I liked how everything was being done as the staff did their errands politely, calmly and without rush. This to me was a true definition of hospitality, the staffs genuinely cared about their guests from the time they check-in to when they departure. I noticed that customer service at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is one of their strongest qualities.
Accommodation: Wooden Luxury in the Heart of the Wild
During my stay at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge I occupied one of the wooden chalets, and honestly speaking, it felt like going into a warm cabin in the wilderness.
Below are some of the features that made me love my stay at the lodge:
- Quiet and peaceful only nature sounds which are charming especially in the morning.
- The interiors are specious with wooden finishing and high ceilings that give the room a cool breeze.
- The rooms are clean with clean beddings, comfortable and warm.
- A private veranda overlooking the savannah and garden areas giving you a panoramic view of the wilderness.
- Room is fitted with a modern bathroom and a hot shower.
- Mosquito nets are fitted around the bed which are very important for any traveller in the Mara.
- It’s fitted with charging outlets which are compatible with all devices.

The room had both a classic African charm and a modern touch. With the large windows letting in a beautiful natural light every morning, I couldn’t wait to wake up every morning and roll up the curtains. Oh! And I can’t forget watching the sunrise from my veranda which was a highlight. You hear birds, distant zebras braying, and sometimes the Maasai tending to the lodge grounds. It’s peaceful in a way hotels in the city can never offer.
If you are truly looking for a Masai Mara accommodation that blends luxury, wildlife, and discretion then Jambo Mara is perfect place for you.
Lodge Grounds & Facilities
The one thing that stands out at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is its massive compound, very spacious and with lots of walking spaces blended with nature. It made me feel like I was in a village deep within the forest.
I noticed the gardens were well maintained offering a scenic environment for nature walk and the swimming pool are was beautifully designed. I have to make use of the many paths in the compound which are perfect for morning and evening walks.
Since the Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is in the Masai Mara I wasn’t surprised of its superb Maasai architecture combined with modern design thus giving it a high-end finishing. The dining area is massive with good views of nature and wildlife which I used to enjoy each time I was having my delicious meals.
Another thing that I know you will all like about this place is that there are plenty of space between rooms for privacy. Most of us when we visit such place, we always want to take picture for keeping memories. I am one of those photogenic people and I couldn’t help revealing it while at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge as there are numerous photo-friendly spots and trust me, your Instagram will love this.
I liked the swimming pool a lot as it was clean, spacious and impressive blended with nature it made every swimming session a good vibe. It’s rare to find such a good pool deep inside the Mara as I’ve been to numerous places but its a no match to any other pool of the surrounding destinations.
Dining Experience: Tasty Meals Everyday
If there’s something that I do not compromise on quality and safety is what I consume and drink. Food is always a big issue for me when reviewing lodges, and Jambo Mara Safari Lodge didn’t disappoint at this, actually it offered among the best meals I’ve ever eaten while on a safari.
During my stay they used to provide for me breakfast, lunch and dinner and I loved every bit of the food. I liked the fact that everyday they used to each meal in a buffet style with an array of foods to chose from. Each food was perfectly prepared with fresh ingredients offering purer, complex and more intense flavour.
This is the part that you are going to like about meals at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is their variety of options for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. Most accommodations around Masai Mara do not have this consideration but when you visit Jambo Mara Safari Lodge you have all choices to make.
I cannot forget the tasty African dishes especially the flavourful stews and ‘chapatis’ I used to eat them mostly during lunch time. Fruits and salads were always available in the dining area and the evening hours; the staff were kind enough to serve us with well prepared soups.
Most of the time I used to have toast, pancakes, cereals, fruits, juices and eggs. The chefs would prepare the best combination for us and I enjoyed every meal they prepared. During dinner I mostly enjoyed a mix of African and continental dishes.
The dining area has a relaxing ambience as the dinning room is airy, open and warm lighting giving you the best aura you would want while having your meal. The staffs are very careful with their guests as they keep checking on them to ensure everyone feels comfortable and is served well.

My Safari Experience: Thanks to Africa Holiday Safaris
I know this article is mainly about Jambo Mara Safari Lodge but I cannot ignore the safari itself. Staying close to the Talek Gate it made our game drive very rewarding. I booked my tour safari through Africa Bed of Roses safaris and as usual their guides delivered over and above as expected.
During my stay I had the chance to make some stunning wildlife sighting. I was able to see an entire pride of lions relaxing under a tree which was very appealing to me. I was able to see elephants by the river drinking water and most importantly how can I not see the great wildebeests and zebras as they grazed peacefully across the vast plains.
I was thrilled to see hippos along the Talek River as they kept splashing the water. And the most astounding scene was when I saw a leopard in a tree as I was told they are rarely sighted. On the vast wilderness, I saw many antelopes and giraffes scattered across the endless plains.
The proximity of Jambo Mara Safari Lodge to prime wildlife areas is a huge advantage. Within a short period of between 10 to 15 minutes entering the park, we had already spotted lions this was a good experience for me.
If you’re booking a safari package, definitely ask Africa Bed of Roses safaris to pair it with Jambo Mara Safari Lodge to get a unique experience.
Evenings at the Lodge: Tranquillity & Cultural Experience
The evenings at the lodge used to be magical especially after a long game drive. Some of my favourite evening moments were watching the sunset while relaxing on my veranda. I also liked listening to distant hyena calls as I gazed at the clear night skies filled with stars
I am usually a social person so I used to have warm, friendly conversations with other guests. At times I would attend a Maasai cultural performance near the dining area.
I liked how the Maasai dances added a special cultural touch. I also know this is where you will get to learn about their traditions, dress, and way of life. It’s both entertaining and educational, especially for first-time visitors.
Staff & Customer Service: Truly Exceptional
If I was to choose the biggest highlight of Jambo Mara Safari Lodge it’s the staff who were warm, attentive, polite, always smiling and willing to help. From waiters to housekeepers, security guards to receptionists they treated us like one big family. I’ve stayed in several lodges within Masai Mara but the friendliness that was at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge was on another level.
Why I Highly Recommend Jambo Mara Safari Lodge
Here is my summary of why I believe Jambo Mara Safari Lodge is one of the best places to stay in the Masai Mara.
- Friendly staff, you will truly feel at home
- Great food, the lodge provides diverse, fresh and satisfying meals
- It’s an affordable luxury as you will always get the value for your money. The room services, meals and other amenities feels like on higher-end lodge.
- Strategic location, near Talek Gate which means shorter drives and better game viewing with convenient access to multiple parts of the reserve.
- Spacious wooden chalets which are very quiet, unique and comfy.
Things I Think Need To be Improved
Despite my stay being excellent all the way from check-in to departure there are a couple oft areas that I think need improvement.
Road Leading to the Lodge
I know this is not a big issue but as the other roads leading to lodges near Talek Gate are rough and bumpy I think this can be fixed slowly. However, I feel its worth noting.
Internet Connectivity
Everyone wants to be connected to the internet and the Wi-Fi in the Mara is naturally not very strong due to the remote location. Jambo Mara has Wi-Fi, but it’s not the best in every corner of the lodge. A bit more coverage would be great for travellers who need to stay connected. These are minor observations, and they didn’t affect my overall experience.

Final Reflections: My Last Morning at Jambo Mara Safari Lodge
I dislike it when I have to cut short my adventurous safari but on my last morning, I woke up early to catch the sunrise as i was already used to the morning sun at my private veranda. And for this day the air was crisp, the sky was orange, and everything was silent except for birds welcoming the new day. As usual, I sat on the veranda with a cup of hot coffee, watching the golden light sweep across the grass.
