History of The Fairmont Mara Safari Club
Before we enjoy the experience at the Safari Club, let us first understand its history.
Fairmont Mara Safari Club was established and opened as part of the renowned Fairmont Hotels and Resorts Collection in the year 1989.
The Safari Club was designed to merge African Heritage with world-class comfort.
As you walk around the camp, you can sense that history and care go hand in hand, where you can see the Masai-inspired architecture, how the staff blend the Masai tradition and modern service.
Did you know that the land where Fairmont Safari Club stands on 100 acres of land, which belonged to the Masai land owner, leased from the Late Senior Chief Lerionka Ole Ntutu?
Before becoming a safari Club, it was an old hunting camp that had been repurposed for photographic safaris and tourism after Kenya banned hunting in 1976.
Therefore, after recognising the potential of the area, especially its proximity to the Mara River, wildlife-rich ecosystems and the wider Mara region, plans were eventually made to create the Fairmont Mara Safari Club.
Over time, the Safari Club has become a preferred destination for travellers seeking both adventure, redefined comfort with a distinctive experience compared to other classic lodges in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Transition
In May 2005, a major turning point came when Fairmont Hotels and Resorts acquired several Kenyan properties, including the Mara Safari Club.
As part of the acquisition and rebranding, the Mara Safari Club, alongside others, was slated to be renamed under the Fairmont Banner, reflecting a push to integrate global luxury hospitality standards with Kenyan Safari Heritage.
This bold move helped place the Fairmont Mara Safari Club on the global map, attracting international tourists and raising the profile of Kenya Safari Hospitality.
Sustainability At Fairmont Mara Safari Club
I did not go to Fairmont Mara Safari Club expecting to learn anything about sustainability.
All I was thinking about was fresh air, clear skies and maybe a long exhale after weeks of nonstop work. But the Mara always has a way of teaching you things slowly, like a story one chapter at a time.
Since its establishment, Fairmont Mara Safari Club has been recognised as a model of sustainable tourism that balances luxury hospitality with environmental and community responsibility.
Environmentally, the Safari Club engages in a variety of initiatives designed to protect and restore the local ecosystem through:
- I participated in the seed ball restoration project, which involves dispersing seeds across the savannah to help replenish native trees.
- There are beehives in the surrounding area.
Fairmont Mara does not do this for aesthetics.
The bees from the bee hives help support the local ecosystem, pollinate native plants and even produce the purest honey you will ever taste. You will even carry some home.
Would you want to know the sustainability story that touched my heart the most?
This is the story:
Fairmont Mara Safari Club sits on the Olchoro Oiriua Conservancy, land owned by 177 Masai families. I was shocked at first.
Here is the gist: Every night you sleep under the Mara sky, you are contributing directly to their livelihoods, their schools, their training programs, their women’s initiatives and cultural preservation.
As I interacted with them, one young lady told me that she received hospitality training from the conservancy through a Fairmont supportive program. That’s impressive, right?
Seeing her pride made the sustainability story feel even more personal.
Before I left the Mara, I understood one thing: when you go to the Mara, you are not just visiting, but you are part of its ongoing story, a story of care, restoration, and co-existence.

Location
Located deep in the Masai Mara National Reserve right along the edge of the Mara River, The Fairmont Mara Safari Club enjoys a prime position that offers panoramic views of the golden plains, acacia trees and occasional wildlife roaming freely in the ecosystem.
When I was doing my research, this location stood out to me for one major reason: Privacy. You are inside a world-famous ecosystem, yet you are also far away from the busy routes.
The kind of peace here feels like luxury on its own.
If you are wondering if this is your kind of place, you do not have to second-guess.
This place is perfect for:
- Luxury travellers who do not want to compromise
- Couples looking for intimacy and quiet moments
- Solo travellers craving mental space
Accommodation: Where Luxury Meets The Wild
As a solo traveller, once I visit a place, first impressions are very key. You know the feeling of “ wow! This is nice!”, Fairmont Mara Safari Club gives you exactly that in the first five seconds.
The moment I stepped my feet in Fairmont Mara Safari Club, I felt something different. This was not just a place to sleep, it was an experience wrapped in elegance.
From the outside, the safari club looked beautifully blended into the environment. It was stylish, earthy and softly elevated above the riverbank. But the moment you unzip that door and step inside, you completely forget you are in the bush entirely.
The rooms feel like a boutique hotel suite that just happens to breathe in fresh Mara air.
The Fairmont Masai Mara Safari Club offers 38 to 51 lavishly furnished tented rooms, with most sources pointing to 38 deluxe waterfront tents with modern amenities and private decks overlooking the Mara River.

If you are picturing a basic safari tent at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, erase that image.
Fairmont Safari Club tents, I can refer to canvas suites, which are designed with comfort but still pay tribute to the natural world around them.
I loved how the Safari Club have managed to strike a balance between modern luxury and safari Charm.
Inside the tents, you will find:
- Plush king-sized beds with crisp high-thread count sheets
- A gorgeous 4-poster mosquito net that makes you feel like royalty
- Thoughtful touches like soft robes, slippers and curated toiletries
- Rich wooden furnishings that give the room warmth and character
Something people do not understand when travelling is the capacity.
Fairmont Mara Safari Club tents generally accommodate 2 to 4 people, with options for one queen bed for up to 3 guests.
Amenities That Elevate Everything At Fairmont Mara Safari Club
When I got to the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, the first thing I felt was comfort. Not the loud kind, but it was the soft, quiet kind that just wraps you and makes you think, “ Yes, this is where I am meant to be.”
Rooms
Let me tell you, my room felt like a small luxury room.
My room had a big, comfortable bed, soft pillows, and clean white sheets that made me sleep like a baby.
I loved how my room opened up to the Mara River. Sometimes I would just sit outside and watch the Hippos mind their own business. It was so therapeutic.
In addition, the bathrooms were modern with hot water, which was very important during chilly Mara mornings and evenings.

Restaurant
The first time I walked into the restaurant, I paused for a second. Not because anything dramatic happened, but it’s because the restaurant had this calm, welcoming glow.
The tables were neatly set, sunlight spilled through the open sides, and there was also this gentle hum of fellow guests chatting softly. It was like everyone knew they were somewhere special.
I later made my way to the buffet, and honestly, it felt like discovering a treasure hunt.
It was the biggest challenge, selecting what I was going to it and what I was not going to eat.
One of the chefs noticed my distress and came to where I was and gave me the warmest smile.
He told me, “Try this,” while pointing at a dish I had never tried before.
He explained to me what it was made of and assured me I would really love it. He was right. I did.
Since that day, it has become our routine. I stood there, curious with my plate and him explaining how the dishes were made and what I could try. I felt personal.

Lounge & Bar – Soft Music and Good Vibes
One evening after dinner, I decided to visit the lounge and unwind a bit.
I sat at a table where I would feel comfortable, and immediately the waiter approached me.
I ordered my drink, something warm and something refreshing as I observed the sun melt down its horizon.
Honestly, watching the Mara sunset from the lounge was healing. What I loved the most was how easy it was to lose track of time.
This place wasn’t just a lounge, it was an evening ritual, I may say.

Swimming Pool
Every trip you go on always has that one place that steals your heart. For me, this was the place.
One afternoon when the sun was out, after the morning game drive, I returned to my room tired and very dusty.
I thought, Why don’t I enjoy the afternoon at the swimming pool area?
Immediately, I took a cold shower, put on my beautiful swimsuit and went to the swimming pool.
The pool is divided into two sections, the shallow-end and the deep-end. I could maneuver both!

What made me enjoy the swimming session even more was the freedom it gave me.
In that, there was no rush, no one calling me and no schedules. I could just float, close my eyes and let the sounds of the Mara fill me. It felt like the Mara had slowed down just for me.
Every afternoon, I returned to that pool, and I felt lighter. Not just physically but emotionally.
The swimming pool became my sanctuary, my pause button, the little piece of the Mara that felt mine.

- Morning Game Drives
During the game drives, I loved spotting Lions stretching in the morning sun, elephants walking across the horizon, and zebras swaying their hips crossing the savanna.
The tour allocated to me by Africa Bed of Roses safaris was incredible, sharing stories about the wild animals and also helped me notice details that I could obviously miss.

Here, every angle is photogenic, and the tour guides always help you spot the perfect moments.

4. Cultural Experience
This was one of the best experiences I had during my stay at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club.
I got the chance to meet and interact with the Masai local communities, where I got to hear their stories, learn about traditions, and also try beadwork.
This experience was very heartwarming.
It also reminded me that the Mara is not only about the wildlife, but it is also about people and culture.
